why should the dealer sell you back your coin at a loss?
your not being fair! YOUR not paying the dealer's over head you will have to pay what the dealer wants and it makes NO difference what the dealer paid for the coin.

No one said the dealer should sell the coin back at a loss. If there is one thing that can be learned from this thread it is to read the damn post and unless you have info to the contrary, then take what the poster says at face value and don't be reading into it things that aren't there. There are 3 ways to buy from a dealer: 1. Pay his sticker price with no questions asked. 2. Make HIM an offer, he can then pass or play. 3. Ask him to make you an offer aka his best price wherein you can pass or play.
In this case the poster [armed with smoe info usually NOT available to most buyers; the dealer's cost] chose the option behind door # 2. I see nothing wrong with that. Perhaps he could have titled it a bit differently.
Well its pretty obvious to me that smoe people can't understand what they read. If you are going to read anything "into" this initial post its a simple matter of "I would like to have that coin back if I can get it for X dollars, but not for Xplus dollars. If anyone has solid evidence that there is more to it than that, then please share it with us.
I have read most of this thread and may have missed a few points or the originaly poster (chabot) left out some details... from what I have read you sold this dealer a coin above ask/bid and he bought it (I believe he originated the price). Now it seems the coin is not worth what you sold it to him for (did not see details to contradict this). Now as I understand it you are willing to buy it back from him at a price lower than he originally paid you for it (how noble) ...am I wrong? You say he lied to you (a dealer lie... go figure) , well you also lied by omission (sp?). I personally see you in a negative light, (no I don't know you) but the thread sounds sort of like you know the price he paid you know he got ripped and you (at least in your mind) want to save him by letting him dump the coin back to you at a loss... hmm have my cake and eat it too...... If you give more details regarding pricing (actual dollars and more facts) maybe the board will be more understanding to your case... as of now I don't see it..

There is nothing more powerful than the power of goodbye
The kid sold the coin to a well known major dealer who paid over bid for it because of the pedigree. The dealer apparently can't move the coin and it sits in his case collecting dust. The kid [who BTW calls himself a young numismatist] hopes the dealer will cut his losses and sell the coin for a bit less than he paid. I find it hard to fathom how many here can believe that a young wet behind the ears kid can take a major player in the business and bury him in a coin LOL. Sounds to me like the guy did it to himself.
Sounds like the dealer had a conniption fit cuz smoeone had the audacity to try to lowball him a little bit on a coin. Good thing I don' t do that everytime some dealer types here try it on me when I list stuff for sale on the BS&T board or I would be buying Pepto Bismol in 5 gallon pails at Sam's club.
<<"He has ABSOLUTELY no obligation to sell to you and I can't believe how many times you have alluded to the idea that he should just bite the bullet and sell it back to you at a loss.">>
He never alluded to anything, all he did was try to explain why he thought his slightly low offer mite be accepted. If you saw a tradein sitting on a dealer's used car lot for 4 months wouldn't it occur to you that just maybe the dealer might take a reasonable offer to get the thing sold? Its the same exact thing here. You have NOTHING to lose by making a lower offer. Like most things in life; you don't ask, you don't get. Like I said a zillion times all he [the dealer] had to say was a POLITE no thanks.
<<"As to the supposed lie, there could be innumerous interpretations on that, many of which other replies have explained.">>
I suppose maybe the kid was disappointed that his strategy didn't work, but the coin is a pedigreed easily recognized unique item [per the post] for which the dealer paid strong money, not some common ms63 widget. He didn't conveniently forget how much he had in it. Yeah right. He was born at nite, but it warn't last nite.
Did the kid rag on the dealer about buying the coin after his offer was refused? I have no way of knowing and neither does anyone else here.
Why would he expose him for smoething as trivial as forgetting what he paid for a coin? I would think if smoeone was knowingly untruthful about what he paid for a coin then he might be untruthful on other matters as well. Just my impression.
Most if not all people here won't name names for fear of reprisal [legal or otherwise] so why should he? He just asked what people here thought of dealers who stretch the truth. Looks like its no big deal to most.
