Help with information on Statue of Liberty Medal???

Folks, I bought this statue of liberty medal out of an old collection here in Maine around 1988. In the collection was a lovely F-12 Bust dollar among other items including IHCs and Canadien silver. The Bust dollar was being protected by an old sock by the owner. Yes, the sock was clean.....image

I bought the whole lot. About 1 year ago, I uncovered the state of liberty medal in my safe deposit box. I have not seen a reference on the medal and need help with identification and potential value. The medal is bronze, about the size of a morgan dollar and about 1/4 inch thick.

Can anyone help me ID the medal or a reference that would provide the history of the piece? Much appreciated......

    Apparently it was also struck as a silver proof. According to Link to ebay auction of same design it is a medal struck in celebration of the presentation of the Statue of Liberty. Designed by Frank Barber. The obverse features a bust with "A. BARTHOLDI" beneath it and "BARBER. F" on the trunk. At the top is "PRESENTED JULY 4:1884" with "A GIFT OF THE FRENCH REPBULIC" to the left and "TO THE UNITED STATES" at the right. The legend "COMMEMORATIVE MONUMENT OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE" surrounds the top of the reverse, which shows the Statue erected on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor with the city in the background and "LIBERTY ENLIGHTENING THE WORLD ERECTED 1886" in exergue.

    I find the July 4th 1884 date interesting. I knew that the original idea was to present the statue to the US in 1876 for our centennial but that they were not able to do so. The 1884 date is when the French presented us the unassembled statue in France. We didn't formally accept the statue until after it was assembled on Bedloe's Island in October of 1886.

    I don't recall seeing it before, but then there are a lot of medals and tokens outside of the Hard Times, Civil War and Presidental campaign areas that I have not seen.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
