Marine Coin Sellout in Sight according to NN

Sorry if this has already been reported here, but I didn't see anything.

According to NN, as of Aug. 23, 543,856 total coins sold out of total 600,000 almost assured to be a sellout.

This is my new favorite modern commem, great looking coin IMHO.

    Alrighty.... some color!image

It's really difficult to decide which is better; the Unc or the Proof. I think it's a winner no matter what!

I orginally just ordered the proof, but after seeing some of the uncir's I went ahead and ordered one of those too.
  • The uncirculated version sure looks great in the picture Lucy posted. I've never ordered anything from the mint, but took the bite on the Legacy set this weekend. It appears the backordered date is directly tied to each day as it passes adding 1 systematically. At least it is consistent. image
  • The Legacy set is the sleeper. Only 50,000, no proof set since 1946 had a mintage of less then 50,000.

    From NN

To free up more proof coins for individual sales, the Mint has decided to cap the production limit of the American Legacy Collection at 50,000 instead of the previously announced 100,000.

  • My uncirc.s came today and they're sweet. These coins were struck HARD. You can really see the indention from the reverse to the obverse!
Everything I write is my opinion.

    Looking for alot of crap.

I really like this design. I think it will take its place as one of the more popular modern commems.

However, in reading all the threads about potential sell-outs I get the impression that many are thinking this will go up in value. I don't believe so. The mintage is just way too large in comparison to others in the series. The big winners in the modern commem series have mintages of less than 20,000. Some say "What about the Buffalo Dollar?" Yes, the Buffalo Dollar does have a combined mintage of 500,000. But the reason it has maintained its price increase is because the dealers were caught off guard by the speed of internet ordering. Being shut out by the incredibly fast sell out the dealers were unable to build inventories. Even the dealers who got in and placed large orders were limited to just 10 coins after the fact.

With the Marine Dollar, the limits have been lifted and the dealers have ordered all they need for inventory. So enjoy the beautiful coins, but don't count on any big gains. Although as a collector of modern commems, no one would be more pleased than I to see big gains.

I do believe there could be some appreciation in the Legacy set. If the current collectors of the Prestige Proof Sets see this as a must have to keep their collections current it could take off. Right now it is running under the radar to these collectors cause non have reached the market yet.
  • Fatman: I agree and disagree. Dealers were limited in their orders, which will not be the case with these coins. However, consider demand: the buffalo dollar was desired by coin collectors, many of whom had heard in magazines or on message boards or newsletters that the coin was coming out and so lined up right away to order theirs as soon as it was released by the mint.

In contrast, the Marine coin is desired by coin collectors, and marines. We coin collectors were eagerly awaiting the launch date and placed our orders right away, but many current and former marines do not follow numismatic news and so may not have been aware that the mint was selling the coin. Weeks or months after sellout, someone sees a picture of it or hears of it and decides they want to buy one, and they have to pay the secondary market price since the primary market (the mint) is sold out already.

I think some people are afraid that everyone who wants a marine coin will have had plenty of time in the last 5-6 weeks to order theirs. While this may be true of coin collectors, there are many marines and relatives of marines who will want the coin, but do not become aware of the issue until after the mint's sellout. Whether this "delayed demand" will negate dealer speculation remains to be seen, but I believe it will be a factor nonetheless.
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

Nea coins, I wish they'd ship the dam things.

Every time I look, they've added 3 days to the expected ship date.

Just got my uncirculated one yesterday to add to my proof. Its a beautiful coin, so I ordered one for my mom since she liked it so much too.
  • As far as Marine Corps demand driving the price up, I would think that non-collectors would hit a point where they won't buy something that they view as more of a novelty. (Of course, I know some pretty die-hard Marines, so you can never tell!)
