PayPal
I looked at an 1966 MS67 SMS nickel on eBay and noticed that the seller preferred PayPal but would accept other methods of pay. I emailed him to check to be sure I could bid before doing so. I do not have, nor do I want a PayPal account. The seller emailed back and said he would accept a money order. When I tried to bid eBay said I did not meet the sellers requirements because I didn't have a registered PayPal account.
It's a problem for me to go to the post office and buy a money order just as it's a problem for the seller to accept one. If I were in business I would take money however it came in. The name of the game is to sell what you post.

Don't like having a credit card number out there that can be hacked into. I have not written a check that bounced in over 30 years and money orders are always good.

Money orders are NOT always good. There have been several instances of fake MO in the past year. I've had a couple bad ones albeit from australia.

There is a "Buyer Requirements" settings sellers can set in their auctions, and one option is to require a PayPal account. This way PayPal can provide revenue for their pimp.
So regardless if you seller will take a money order, he has the PayPal requirement set. If you are going to deny PayPal their fee's there will be some auctions where you won't be able to bid.
But paying by Money Orders has some drawbacks as well

Money orders are indeed not always good. This past week there was a spot on local TV news about scams using money orders that the recipients thought cashed good, only to find out later the bank rejected them as bogus. The scammers had the recipients cash large money orders and then mail back the overpayment to the scammers.

But you freely hand it over to the 18 year old casher who could easily steel, use, and post your number. BTW you are not responsible for charges that you did not make.
<< <i>A PayPal account does not require your credit card information IF you take the funds from your checking account. It works the same as using a debit card instead of writing a paper check. If you want extra security just have a separate checking account that you use only for PayPal. I feel more comfortable with PayPal taking from my checking account than when I mail a paper check. >>
You can even get a debit card for the seperate account and put it on paypal instead of credit card. Right now my ebay checking account has $2 in it. When you get ready to buy something, transfering money from main account to this one is very easy to do. My bank has a free checking account that I use.

great Idea, I have an old business checking account from my old sales job...now I have a use for it. I can take my primary CC and BA off the PP acct.

Irrational paranoia. It's far more likely that your card will be "hacked" by some waiter or dumpster-diver. PayPal's much safer than any number of Real Life credit card transactions.

He probably set the auction as requiring "instant purchase payment."

My credit card was just hacked by someone. Called the cc company, they closed the account, sent me a new card, and reversed all the charges. It's far better to use a credit card than to use a debit card.
Now this is probably more information than is required, but just letting you know what I do coin-wise, and why I am here, since I am relatively new to the boards.
