PayPal

I looked at an 1966 MS67 SMS nickel on eBay and noticed that the seller preferred PayPal but would accept other methods of pay. I emailed him to check to be sure I could bid before doing so. I do not have, nor do I want a PayPal account. The seller emailed back and said he would accept a money order. When I tried to bid eBay said I did not meet the sellers requirements because I didn't have a registered PayPal account.

It's a problem for me to go to the post office and buy a money order just as it's a problem for the seller to accept one. If I were in business I would take money however it came in. The name of the game is to sell what you post.

Come on, man, sign up for PayPal. Everyone's doing it!

Don't like having a credit card number out there that can be hacked into. I have not written a check that bounced in over 30 years and money orders are always good.

Money orders are NOT always good. There have been several instances of fake MO in the past year. I've had a couple bad ones albeit from australia.

Ever since eBay adopted it's wicked step-child PayPal, they try to make PayPal feel at home.

There is a "Buyer Requirements" settings sellers can set in their auctions, and one option is to require a PayPal account. This way PayPal can provide revenue for their pimp.

So regardless if you seller will take a money order, he has the PayPal requirement set. If you are going to deny PayPal their fee's there will be some auctions where you won't be able to bid.

But paying by Money Orders has some drawbacks as well

  • I know PayPal seems to be the going thing but I am from the old school. My eBay Feedback is excellent, 100%, I always pay quickly, usually the next day. The most I have ever spent at one time on eBay was a little over $500 on a 3 coin set of Carver/Washingtons, paid by personal check. PayPal is not just on eBay. There is a golf course nearby I have been trying to get a foursome together for all summer but with no success. They have an on-line special if you pre-pay with PayPal. Since I don't have a PayPal account I lose out there. I guess there are advantages and disadvantages to everything.

A PayPal account does not require your credit card information IF you take the funds from your checking account. It works the same as using a debit card instead of writing a paper check. If you want extra security just have a separate checking account that you use only for PayPal. I feel more comfortable with PayPal taking from my checking account than when I mail a paper check.

Money orders are indeed not always good. This past week there was a spot on local TV news about scams using money orders that the recipients thought cashed good, only to find out later the bank rejected them as bogus. The scammers had the recipients cash large money orders and then mail back the overpayment to the scammers.image

But you freely hand it over to the 18 year old casher who could easily steel, use, and post your number. BTW you are not responsible for charges that you did not make.

You can even get a debit card for the seperate account and put it on paypal instead of credit card. Right now my ebay checking account has $2 in it. When you get ready to buy something, transfering money from main account to this one is very easy to do. My bank has a free checking account that I use.

Irrational paranoia. It's far more likely that your card will be "hacked" by some waiter or dumpster-diver. PayPal's much safer than any number of Real Life credit card transactions.
  • If you want to do paypal and are afraid of being taken, here is what I did. Open a seperate checking or savings acount and keep a low $25 balance in it. Then get a tyme or check card associated with the account. You can register this card as a credit card with paypal. You can only be taken for the balance of the account which is minimal.

He probably set the auction as requiring "instant purchase payment."

My credit card was just hacked by someone. Called the cc company, they closed the account, sent me a new card, and reversed all the charges. It's far better to use a credit card than to use a debit card.
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."
  • P.S. For sellers: my bank informs me that money orders are the same as checks--they take time to clear. I require postal money orders to ship immediately (or PayPal of course)...all other MOs and personal checks I hold until they clear.

  • Thanks to all of you for the replys. There is some very worthwhile info here. I have never ran into a problem where I couldn't bid on an item. I am trying to put together the 3 year SMS in certified and lack the 1¢ in the '65 and need all but the 1¢ in the '66. Have the complete '67 set. They are difficult to find. Was just doing this to fill my time between major purchases for my 144 piece commem set.

Now this is probably more information than is required, but just letting you know what I do coin-wise, and why I am here, since I am relatively new to the boards.
