What appears to be a fake coin in an eBay auction

Here's the coin: Link to auction

The obverse picture is of a 42/1-P and the reverse is of some "D" mintmark Merc. The auction states that it is for a 42/1-D, unfortunately 42/1-D's don't look like 42/1-P's. In fact, unless the 42/1-D is high grade, a good number of people probably wouldn't even recognize the overdate.

Thoughts?

  • It seems like he's rambling on in his discription.

Be very careful on e-bay if you ever have a problem e-bay WILL NOT help you even if you dont use you account someone else could there is no customer service and there is no way to suspend your own account the security that they talk about is run by the 3 stooges!my advice is to stay away and go to a show
  • Is it normal for the "D" to be so prevalent and stand out?

I'm not looking to buy it...just an alert so someone else doesn't (potentially) get skunked.

Sticking with the new forum term. No "Happy Talk" for that cleaned thing. Yes it is strange looking.

I also think the seller is being a bit optimistic with his grade of AU55.

I agree that the obverse image looks wrong for the D- mint over-date and wrote to the seller.

This other listing of his looks odd too, as it appears to be a certified coin, but no mention is made of such.

  • I'd recognize that yellow background anywhere. He lifted the image of our 1942/1 PCGS VF-35. No worries, I'll ensure nobody ends up winning the coin. Just wrote the seller with this message:

Do you want to cancel this auction because you lifted the picture from the Rare Coins of New Hampshire website, or should I just bid $10,000 and ensure that nobody else wins and gets scammed by you. Your choice, just let me know which way you'd like to go. If I don't hear from you shortly I will assume that you want me to bid really, really high. Thanks.

The obverse is that of the Philadelphia 1942/1, not the Denver overdate.
    It's a scam alright.

Lucky that he didn't lift the matching reverse. He would have gotten away with it.

RCNH needs to report that to eBay. They will cancel the auction for the scammer.

IMHO,a bidder in this auction strwr2 is a shill. Bids only on this seller's auctions and like everything from Star Wars memorabilia to rare coins the seller does not have.

  • I reported the item to ebay last night (twice) and I am not confident that they will do anything about it. Fortunately scumnuker has a friend that has the item on his watch list.

On a side note, I also reported this other item by the same seller as a lottery type of auction which is prohibited. Ebay has not acted there either. Over 50 people have bid so far, got to love it.
