grade = vf-30 based on details.

The reverse is well struck for an 1804.
That's what I was originally thinking based on the stars and fields, but imho the hair has too much detail to grade below VF30.
The reason I said VF-20 was that I had an 1804 14 Star with much more detail than this coin. It was in a PCGS-35 holder.
I also had a 13 Star in a PCGS-12 holder that was very similar to this coin but less detailed.
It's tough to grade 1804 because they come so poorly struck, however this one is nicely struck.
The picture is not all that great. Would be nice to see it in person. It does look familiar??
I haven't seen the coin in person. I'm thinking about it, as it's one of 2 dates I still need in the series...

As for grade, I am just going to come out and say it boldly like I know - XF40-45

<< <i>A real coin for a real collector. Hop on it. >>
Greg,
I hopped! Was on the phone with HLRC yesterday and the coin arrived today. How's that for outstanding service? I am not even a regular customer of Harry's, but all he asked for was a few references and he Express Mailed the coin to me. It arrived even before the regular mailman came to pick up my out-going check.
I'll get some real pics up later today. I'm very pleased with the coin in person.
The coin looks to be free of major distractions/problems (but check out the nearly vertical scratch(?) on the reverse which starts to the left of the "O" in "OF") and has a very pleasing overall appearance. It was probably dipped (or as some would say - cleaned) long ago and retoned on its own from there, but I like the color.
If it looks as nice in person and is priced anywhere near reasonably, go for it!
Another happy ending.
Killer coin. I'd say straight up 35. Is it slabbed already?
coinguy1 - Thanks for your opinion, Mark. The scratch on the reverse is barely visible. It does stand out in the pic, though.
For those that don't know the series, this is the key date. It is a poorly struck date. The reverse was lapped after previously being used for quarter production. Note the weak stars on the right, in the top row. It's typical for the date.
Here's my pic, which give's a more realistic image than the pic in my first post, which came from the Stack's online auction catalog:
do you mean, "quarter eagle production" ? I understand the reverse of the 1807 dime was also used for $2 1/2s.
Is this true of all the years, does anyone know?
Awesome coin!

Still it’s all a matter of price and availability. An 1804 dime in choice AU would be in the condition census or darn close to it. So one if Choice VF from a sharpness perspective would be a nice find for a middle class collector who wanted one.
And I hate to say it, but most of the time when a coin is in an ANACS holder, it’s there for a reason. If it were my choice, I’d send to NGC if the coin could get into their holder. Otherwise as a seller I’ll take an ANACS holder over an NCS holder in a heartbeat. I HATE the look of the NCS holder.
Oops. Yes, that's exactly what I meant (but didn't say.)
Bill - This coin is part of the Gardner Collection which Stacks auctioned in March of this year. If you look at the coins from this collection, you'll see they all have the same toning. I had a long talk with Harry Laibstain about it, and his thought was all the coins were wiped with a silk cloth (common in the 30s, he said), then placed in Kraft envelopes or Wayte-Raymond albums for many years. He went on to say about half the coins from this collectionwere slabbed by PCGS or NGC (after the sale - they were sold raw) and the other half were bagged for cleaning, without any rhyme or reason considering all the coins had the same look. So, best guess is this coin probably bagged (Harry bought it at ANA already slabbed by ANACS.) Interestingly, ANACS, which tends to point out the smallest of problems and net grades coins at the drop of a hat, did not identify any problems, nor net grade this coin. Perhaps a resubmission to PCGS/NGC will get the coin holdered, but I'm going to leave the coin as is. If and when I decide to sell, then I'll decide if reholdering is worth a shot.

Barry, I love the coin. Who cares what plastic it is in so long as you like it and feel that you are paying a fair price for it.
I'd jump all over it....Mike
