Just purchased it. The front of the slab is really scratched and needs to be reholdered.

Hint: It is mint state

62, but if many of the marks are on the plastic, maybe 63.

What astrorat said. Since the second pic appears to show that most of the marks are in the plastic, I'll go 63.

Funny you should post a "Grade the Trade" thread about the same time as I did.

    Here is mine.

Clean surfaces so I'll guess 64.

I may be wrong, but I don't see anything that keeps it from MS65. I think a few marks are allowed, and it looks like a good strike.

    I don't even own a Trade Dollar but I would guess MS63.

MS62. If the coin is with good luster, then MS63.

My, what an unusual grade. Usually reserved for a dinged up coin.

TDN....I know. I can't figure out why PCGS MS60ed this coin. It is not all banged up, has no major problems and is not an AU super slider. image

Usually I expect to see MS-60s chopped up in a blender. This one doesn't appear to be that way.
  • lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,897 ✭✭✭✭✭
Mine was MS60 as well. But PCI gold label instead of PCGS. Mine would probably bodybag at PCGS.

Nice coin, 5c- it was kind of neat that we both posted "MS60" Trade dollars at practically the same time! image

Yours has nowhere to go but up, in my opinion. Mine, on the other hand, is probably doomed to remain in Third World MS60 plastic or raw. I wouldn't want an ANACS net grade on it. I still like the look of mine and think it was a worthy purchase. I can see why you are so thrilled to have yours, particularly if you bought it based on the PCGS grade.

There must be something that is not showing up in the photographs. Neither of those looked like MS60's. A True MS60 is one ugly coin. Those are not ugly or beat up. The only thing I can thing of is they might have been cleaned long ago, but recovered enough to avoid a body bag.

I can only guess that PCI went 60 on mine because of the apparent staple scratch near the arrow tips on the reverse.

    image

Which of course would bodybag it at a more reputable service.

Nice trade dollar LM.image Why do think it will BB at PCGS....the staple scratch?

  • lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,897 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yeah, the staple scratch probably wouldn't make the cut at the Big Two.

The obverse of the holder is scratched. I am going to go ahead and get the coin regraded instead of reholdered.

It has a good strike for an 1877-P. I agree with TDN-- it should be MS62 (unless the surfaces look worse than indicated in the photos).

It might have a trace of wear but the luster was too nice to put in a circulated holder, so they net it upwards.
