Marine Corps - American Legacy Set

Please advise:

I am very excited about the release of these commems. I plan on purchasing an example of at least the unc and proof versions as well as the Stamp and Coin set..... BUT, I am looking for a reason/excuse to buy the American Legacy Set.

Why should buy this when I could spend less by buying all the products separately? What are your thoughts? Do I spend the $$ just for the pretty packaging? Is the proof set included silver or clad?

The packaging on the Legacty collection is very cheesey. IMHO anyway, not worth the $135 either.

Apparently the coins are not selling too well, and the Mint is coming up with "creative" ways of trying to up the sales. Somewhat similar to the Edison commemorative dollar. I've never really understood why fancy packaging enhances the value of the coins, but apparently, at least in some cases, it does. image
  • It's not so much the packaging as the order limit.
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

I really like the multiple coin sets, and I’m sorry that the mint has stopped issuing them. I would have gladly purchased the Wright Brothers commemorative coins as a set if it had been offered, but it wasn’t. As it was it’s just a disjoined set of coins that really does not fit that well in my collection. I’d buy a fancy box for the coins in their capsules if someone offered it.

The John Marshall and Marine Corp coins don’t have anything to do with each other, other than they will be issued in the same year. As such its kind of a thrown together pair of silver dollars with a Proof set tossed in for good measure. One can buy the coins individually for $97 so you end up paying $38 for a folder, which seems high. It also would have helped if a silver Proof set were included instead of a clad set. If the price were a little more reasonable, I’d probably buy this thing, but as it is I’m on the fence.

I don't think this is the case. Planning for this sort of thing takes a while, it's not thrown together at the last minute. So I don't think they created this because maybe the coins are not selling well.

In fact, I think the Mint is having a record year for coin sales. Over 600,000 2 rolls sets of the buffalo nickel, quarter rolls selling out in 6 weeks, delays in shipping due to high demand.

How could anyone say the Mint's coins aren't selling????

As for the set as a whole instead of it's parts. Look at some of the Prestege sets, not all, just the last few years.

I'll put my order in, they take a week or two to ship, if it looks like a bust, I'll cancel.

I tend to agree although most Americans have no idea who John Marshall was.

The mint has made of sets like this for their most recent commemorative silver dollars. The Lewis & Clark set with the little Indian pouch was a big hit, although I could not understand why, and the Edison coin with the little light bulb was a cute, but sort of a silly idea. It sold out too, but it took a bit longer.

Yes, it's marketing, but if people like it, what's so bad about that?

    from the Mints website:

"Sales for each of the four Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Silver Dollar limited-edition collector products are expected to be brisk on July 20, 2005. The United States Mint anticipates longer than normal hold times on our toll-free number and extended order processing times for our online customers. Please be patient when trying to place your order by either phone or online."

I personally was hoping for the combo set of Proof and UNC.

I've went back and forth on this. I don't think I will, I have all the clad proof sets I need. I'm buying a couple of the UNC with the stamp and a proof coin. If the mint had put out what they were making at the first of the year on their website I may have been a buyer. I can't believe these sell for $135 without the siver set involved and I don't see much upside for very long if any looking at past sets like these..........maybe I'm wrong but this isn't going to change my lifestyle if they double and I'm a little collector not a big dealer wanting to buy hundreds of sets to sell on Ebay.image

Bottom line is both commems for this year are puppy stuff. As a general rule I tend to buy everything the mint has to offer but not in the case of these 2 dog toys.

The mints really starting to get stupid with all these packaging ploys. Bottom line is they need to cut back on production before they really turn off sales. How soon before they start putting in coupons for a free Big Mac combo meal? image

I have no real interest in either of these coins and will not buy any of them regardless of the packaging.....

They need to come up with better comm coins that will get people interested.....

I also think that on coin issues especially they are priced at just to high of a level.....

I’m sorry but Iwo Jima is one of the most American symbols of the 20th century! You must be very young or a PC type person. Hats off to the greatest generation that fought WWII. This is one he!! Of a coin design, maybe you should read “flags of our fathers” and learn the sacrifice of those before you.

I don't mean to put you down but this is one of the best photos of the 20th century IMO and it makes me proud to be an AMERICAN!
I guess it's another presidents coin for you......

In his defense the art work Iwo Jima scene could be a bit more compelling. They have got a lot of space to work with here, and they don't seem to be using it as well as they should, which oddly is often the case on the commemorative silver dollars. The battle scene on the World War II half dollar is bit more interesting.

I'm all for honoring the Marine Corp, but a 230th anniversary is kind of an odd number.

Still I will order one, but the John Marshall coin is the more interesting piece for me.

The consensus of this thread seems to be against the Legacy Set. I hope it is unpopular and they don't sell all the them which would make them more rare. Although they will likely sell them all. I bought both the uncirculated and proof of the 230th Anniversary of the Marines and also the American Legacy Set. I passed on the John Marshall uncirculated comm this year.

  • I was trying to place my order online today. I never was able to check out. I had put a Legacy set in my cart and then thought better of it and tried to delete it. That's when a message comes up and tells me that someone is already logged in as me. Yes, ME! Oh, well. I'll see what happens tonight when I try.

I don't think the Legacy set is quite worth what they are charging, just for a chintzy folder. I am not sure they will hold their value either. That would be the only reason to order them in my humble opinion. I don't LIKE them, so I would just be speculating that they go up in price and I could make a buck or two. Pretty hefty investment for something I don't think will pan out.

  • American Legacy is on backorder until 8/29 (according to my confirmation email). The way I figure it is that if they haven't sold out by 8/29, I'll just cancel my order.
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."
  • P.S. I think the coin and stamp set will turn out to be the best buy and quickest sell-out.
