  • By the way, picture was done with a scanner this time, so it looks very "flat" The coin is altually very lustrous and reflective!
  • Very hard to tell from the pics. The obverse looks AU due to what looks to me like wear in the hair behind the ear.

  • In hand that does not look like wear. It's just from the light of the scanner. In hand, the coin appears to have no wear.
  • Is that a Light Motto? Looks more like a Heavy Motto from the pic. MOC and/or Boom would know for sure.

From the scan, looks like there is some wear on Washington's head, but it is impossible to tell for sure. If you could take a digital photo which shows the luster, we could get a better read on it.
  • Here you are! I only scanned it because I couldn't find my digital camera (AHHH!)! But, I found it, and here you go (I'm not exactly a photographer, and the lighting sucked, but oh well, lol):

I just went and compared it to several medium motto and Light mottos on the Heritage site. It looks medium motto to me... Of course I'd rather have the coin in hand. Same thing with the grade. If I have to go by just the pics I would say AU 58 looks like a lustre break and slight flatness on the hair above the ear.

You should PM Craig (Man of Coins) and see if he'd take a look at a higher res pic for you...

  • Much better pic. Looks MS, could go 65/66, unless there are more hits in the fields than the photo shows, or there is rub the photo is not showing.

Also, that does not look like a light motto. I found This Thread, and based on the pics in there, it looks like you have a medium or heavy motto.
  • Thanks for the comments. I really don't know much about washingtons... I'm into older coins. I'm only going by what the cardboard holder said where I bought the coin.

I think I might PM him high res pics this evening. Right now, I've got to go work (AHH, no no no, please no... fine, okay, as long as I'm making money!!)

    Thanks,

It's hard to tell from the somewhat fuzzy picture, but it appears to have a rub on the highest points, which wold make it an AU. The most noticeable rubs seems to be on the Washington's cheek and down the eagle's body among other places.

This could be envelope toning, but from the photo it really looks like a rub.

    NOT a light motto quarter!

    AU 58 (slider)

I'm sure the quarter guys will respond soon. Doesn't look like a light motto to me either. I've owned a couple certified ones and the motto just looks to "defined" to be LM. AU also for grade.
  • Thanks all. I did some research on the coin and agree that it is not light motto.

As far as grade, the coin in hand still does not appear to really have any wear. There are no marks, scratches, dents, dings, rubbing etc. The reverse, contrary to belief from pictures, shows zero anything. There are perhaps some lines that appear LIKE lint marks (though lint marks are generally seen on proof coins) on the obverse, but nothing noticable or deep.

But you certainly could be right, because you know a lot more about these coins than I!

If you want to learn about the light motto, buy or look at a 1932 and get to know how the motto looks on that coin. You will pick up on the difference.

  • Ah, I bow down to superior intelligence! Upon removal from the cardboard holder and getting a better angle with the light, there is slight, yet obvious wear on the cheek and hair.

    So, AU-50, 55, 58...

    What would you say?

This is most definitely a HEAVY MOTTO. When the middle of the "W" is high as the sides- HM

And it is. As for grade, it's impossible to tell with the lighting but judging from what I know to be true of brutally honest scanners, it's most likely a slider AU 58 (JMHO, of course) image

Still a sweet coin and somewhat rare. In PCGS population, last time I looked, there were 10 times as many Light Mottos as HEAVY MOTTOS. Gotta split................Laterimage

It's a heavy motto with clear and obvious wear on the hair. AU55.

I'll say 55. (I suck at grading Washingtons).

  • Boom is absolutely correct, except it may be a long slide. But I bow to Boom. He has certainly owned more of them than me.(Except the one I got from him.) P.S., whomever you bought it from, if you did, should give $ back , or difference, for not being unc., and not being lt. m.

No, it's just a little antique plaza with a no returns policy. I take the risk when I buy things there. But I take the risk because I've spent about a total of about $150 in there and the cummulative retail of the coins I purchased is nearly $1000 at this point. One bad deal isn't going to bother me, it's my own fault anyway!

Hard to grade from pic's but looks 55 -58ish to me as well. Definitely does not look MS based on the pic's?
