A new client gave me a gift yesterday, an 1803 Large Cent, which is now my oldest coin.

A dealer I know gave my name as a referral to one of his customers. I met with the guy and he is going to hire me to handle a legal dispute. He gave me a gift, an ANACS Net graded VG8, Fine Details, corroded/damaged 1803 Large Cent. It is now my oldest coin, beating the previous coin (an 1929 large cent) by 26 years.

The coin is now 202 years old and IMHO is way cool. Looking at it takes me back in history to when the USA was an infant. If the coin could talk, its history from 1803 until it was slabbed would be incredible to hear.

  • A nice gift! My oldest US is also an 1803 large cent that was also a gift--from my brother. It sits quite happily in my type set.
(My oldest coin is a small greek silver obol from around 450BC.)

I am so stoked about the gift that I will have to reply in kind and give my new client a gift also. I can't give him an early classic since I do not have many of them (I have a few raw ones in my Dansco Type Set Album). So I guess I will have to give him a CAM Proof Frankie.

When I was a small kid I collected everything - the old man down the block gave me the proverbial "tin of old coins I got in the war" - including a selection coins dating from the 1780's to the late 1800's - including my "first" coin - an 1803 Large Cent. Seems like a few had this one as the "first". The first coin I BOUGHT was a 1781 North American Token from Marty Rubinstein when I was 10 for $12 in F-12 ("Fine" back then). At the time, I thought they were minted in 1781 LOL image

I didn't know they minted large cents in 1929.
