I always thought that a 66 should be a super coin and a DMPL should have nice clear fields, IMHO this is a 65PL.

It appears to be at least MS65PL.

MS-66PL unless there are hairlines or other "issues" that can't be seen in the pic.

65PL or 65DMPL. Too bad Liberty had her eyebrow waxed, though.

    66 PL or better.
  • I don't see the camera or the lights in the coin. Just asking: How could it be PL or DMPL without showing some reflection? Kind of looks dirty to me. Is that to be blamed on the photograpy? (Don't jump on me, I am just asking.)

I think you have a good question. According to the experts, PL/DMPL is dependent upon the quality of the reflectivity of the surfaces and not the CAM/DCAM appearance. Additionally, I agree that the fields look hazy.

Are the people calling that coin an MS64PL looking at the same coin I am? Having owned and seen quite a few DMPL Carson City dollars, I would be very surprised if PCGS graded it anything less than an MS66DMPL.

How would you grade this Morgan?

I'd tilt and rotate the coin in the light, and I'd look closely at the coin.
I might use a 7x loupe to examine the highpoints of the design,
and I'd try to evaluate it's overall appearance and grade it
versus the various grades of Morgan dollar that I've seen before

    How sad is that.

  • There were 25 bids on it, currently at $3201; evidently, somebody out there likes it.

I like it, too -- just not as a 66DMPL. I like it as a 65PL and arguably as a 66PL. I don't see DMPL on this one.

IMO, this is an example of buying the holder instead of the coin, which could result in overpaying by a factor of 5.

Those surfaces look like a mid 66 to me. However, I wonder if the coin hazed, turing a DMPL into a PL!

How can you tell mirror depth from a photo? Its hard enough to tell whether a particular coin with good reflectivity is PL or DMPL when you've got the coin in hand. You just can't do it from that photo.

True, especially given that the image looks like a scan. The scan can make the coin look hazy when it really is not. For that kind of dough, I would need a return privilege to confirm that the coin is indeed DMPL.
