what service would authenticate a colonial coin?

I heard that ANACS does NOT authenticate colonial coins. Does anyone know what service would?

PCGS will do anything except the $50 Panama-Pacific (just because it doesn't fit in the holder)

When you say authenticate, I assume you are looking for an opinion of authenticity only without a grade.

    NCS will authenticate any colonial.

ANACS will do Hibernias and Fugios - at least they used to.

If you want an opinion of authenticity and of grade, NGC and PCGS will do all colonials.

    So, what have you got?

    Off the ANACS website:

<< <i>Q. Are there any types of coins that ANACS does not grade and encapsulate?

    A. ANACS does not grade and encapsulate the Panama-Pacific $50 commemorative due to insert aperture limitations. Any coin larger than 40.6 mm or thicker than 3.8 mm cannot be encapsulated. ANACS does not grade cob coins, counterstamped issues, certain emergency issues, some Mexican Revolutionary issues, colonials (with the exception of the Fugio Cent), California fractionals, ancients, blank planchets, paper money. ANACS also does not grade or encapsulate non-genuine pieces or coins with active PVC. >>

Then you would be incorrect image
  • How many people here are worried about a company not slabbing their Panama-Pacific collection? NOT being a millionaire, I'm not too worried.

    NGC does colonial coins too.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I have an ANACS slab with a cob in it. They did a bunch of cob treasure ship coins back in 2003.

ACG would. They probably need the business image.
  • thanks for the replies all--- yeah, I'm just looking to have it authenticated. And that's gonna take some work, given the condition it's in

Sounds like NCS is the winner for you, then.

Good question, I don't know. I bought it for the slab variety and never really paid any attention to the coin or what they said about it. I'll have to check it tomorrow.
