Coins disappearing

I can't seem to find any of the coins I am looking for. The dealers I go to have absolutley no fresh material and it is really making me wonder if too many people are collecting. E bay is dried up of good material and I even tried the buy sell forum. No one seems to have what I am looking for. The strange thing is, I was able to find those coins five years ago in abundance. What the heck is going on here? With the advent of eBay, do you guys think people have gotten smarter therefore reducing the amount of good deals to be had?

    What are you looking for?
  • I'm searching for a 1936 P buffalo in MS63/64, a 1936 P Washington quarter and 1936 P walking liberty in the same grades. These I thought would be common enough to find but it has been quite a long search so far. These I could find in abundance just a few years ago but seems this particular year is fading fast. I remember anything after 1936 was easy to find. I think more people are collecting modern coins today.

While it is quite true that many dealers' inventories are not as great as they would like to be (mine included), it would be inaccurate to say that nothing great is available. Such thoughts can lead you to make some ill-advised purchases in the panic mode that you will regret later.

It’s hard to tell just how difficult your position is without a list of what you want. Some things are really hard to find. They include items that have ALWAYS been scarce and key date coins in very high grade or no problem collector grades. Many of these coins are in collections, but there are also multiple pieces in the hands of speculators who have reaped the rewards from holding these coins in recent years.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Correctly graded coins, esp PQ ones are drying up. Those particular dates you seek should be readily available at any large coin show.

In the last several months, it has been nearly impossible to find any upgrades for any of my sets.
Some of them have not shown up on any of the auctions sites, or even any web sites, for over a year.
It's like everything that I am collecting has just simply dried up, or is being hoarded.
When one of them does show up, it is usually so over priced, that I just pass it by.
    Where will it all end?

If you want to find this paricular coin slabbed, you may be in for a long wait. Any 1936-P Buffalo that would grade 63/64 would/should never be submitted for grading. It isn't worth it.

Do you guys ever try setting up a want list or a "favorite searches" on eBay? Then at least it will notify you if what you are looking for does get posted. Otherwise with my luck, the 5 day break I take from surfing the bay of E will result in me missing a years worth of good deals image Also you'll be first to know if any good BIN deals come up with what you're looking for. Just an idea.

These are lower value dates so they don't commonly get graded, hence don't show up at bigger auctions. You might watch for group lots at Heritage especially the Exclusively weekly Internet Sales. I'd be astonished if you can't find a dealer at a big show that has leftovers from rolls back at the shop, in these grades at cheap prices.

I recently bought a 1936 P buffalo nickel on Ebay it is graded PCGS MS64.
  • I've got that year set. It's my fathers birthyear. They're XF to BU though.
  • Depends on what you are looking for. 2 years ago I couldn't find a nice 28@4 Peace $ in a PCGS holder to save my life. Not een an ugly one in a 4 holder. The Chicago show had at least 10 of them for sale, all nice.....
