Poll: Would you be interested in joining a US Gold Coin Collectors Club?

RYKRYK Posts: 35,800 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hypothetically, if there were an internet-based US Gold Coin Collectors Club with the following terms, benefits, and services, would you be willing to join and participate?

-$25/year
-Private message board for dealer and collector members
-Quarterly e-newsletter with articles written by members and gold coin numismatic news
-Monthly or bi-monthly ask the experts conference call and/or webchat
-Annual meeting at ANA and/or FUN
-Focus on collectors of rare date gold coins including, but not limited to, Southern gold, Carson City and San Francisco gold, early gold, proof gold, $3's, Saints, Indian Head Gold, territorial gold, dated Philly gold, gold patterns, and gold type sets

Do you have any other suggestions for such a club?

  • I think this is a good idea. I'm sure it would be a lot of work, but I would join, participate, and help.

I think for most gold collector it's far too narrow in scope. This would be a better board for dealers and people with a lot of disposal income. Going after the less than 1 percent of the total coin collector base would be hard to keep this fresh. Most people that buy those types of coins buy 1 or 2 for a type sets and don’t make a life’s study out of the hobby.

If you included the more common series of Libs, Saints, and even modern gold it would have a better-shot long term. Many like to find bargains and IMO there are many hard to find dates grouped within the common date gold coins. I know you’re into the “moon money” type coins that most “don’t wish to” or “can’t afford” to collect which is Ok.
If you’re ever to convent the average gold collector your going to have to come down to their level and try and educate them slowly so they’ll hopefully evolve. JMO

With this being a "hardcore" collectors board I'd expect the result of the poll to be flawed off of the typical "joe public" gold coin collector.

Nice idea. I wonder if there would be a big enough draw to sustain critical mass for an active group. There is scant discussion of gold coins in the coin forum, certainly not enough to sustain even an independent thread topic ala the long running Economic Predictions thread. It seems gold collectors are a different breed than regular coin collectors...there is a different mind set and mentality but ultimately most gold collectors seem to mostly keep to themselves. It would be wonderful if there were more discussion threads on gold coins but for me, I would welcome belonging to a "Gold Club".
  • I would be in, and think it's a great idea.

I disagree. Most hardcore gold coin collectors rarely, if ever, post here.

There is already a Southern Gold Society. I would be looking to build upon that organization.

I would also add that I think a mentoring program for gold coin collectors would be something that such a Club should offer. I have suggested it elsewhere in other contexts, and it was well-received.

Judging by the success of clubs like the EAC, LSCC, and others, I think that there is enough of a collector base to support a club.
  • What are the chances that PCGS/NGC would give a submission discount for being a member of such an organization? Probably slim to none but I wonder if anybody ever asked.
    Just another incentive to join.

I'd join as I would love to learn from any materials that are published or from a website. As far as participation, I'd like to but I'm spread too thin already. image

Why not have a stringent membership requirements and then pool the resources of the members and start to buy up the rarities?

well the fee to join is small, so that would not stop me.
I would like to read and participate in the boards.

    So yes, I would join.

as for pooling money to buy coins. no thanks. gold is like a siamese cat,
    prefers one owner.

I would gladly write the first article to see if i could do it.

If you do choose to take on the burden of forming the club you can count me in. And I would be willing help in any way.
