You MUST sell.....POLL

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭
You have three coins.
EACH is an OUTSTANDING pristine original coin and (really) PQ for the grade.
EACH is beautifully toned and virtually irreplaceable except by the dumbest of luck.
ONE is worth what the other two are.
EACH is a truly .....rare..... coin.
They are either ALL classics or ALL moderns.
None are common enough that you can count on replacing ..... at all.

The money you need is exactly HALF of the total of the three so you MUST sell either the one that is worth what the other two combined are or sell the two lower priced ones.

You have NO other options. You NEED this money urgently.

So, boiling it down, would you sell 2 $25,000 coins or 1 $50,000 coin. (or substitute amounts to come to same ratio)

Just don't figure it is something like 2 one dollar coins and 1 two dollar coin.

Substantial values only.

I probably keep whichever is harder to replace with a comparable (or better!) specimen at a later time.

Aaaargh.....no.....they are all equally difficult to replace. You are crazy about ALL THREE. ANY of them would turn heads from 2 aisles over at a show.

no brainer - sell the one, that way, if you have need for funds in the future and you require a lesser amount you could sell another coin and at that point STILL own one of the three beauties.

Probably keep the one with the most sentimental value.

oh dammit mgoodm.....You got ALL THREE from your Grandma on her deathbed who told you she loved you a whole lot.
Or you ripped em 25 years ago.
Or you kept Russ from getting them by three seconds.

All things being equal, I'd keep the most expensive one.

Chill the hell out, if you want a specific answer just tell us what the hell you want. Or let them answer the way they want.

Are you having a bad day?

Feel free to screw the poll if it will release some tension.

I'd sell the two smaller pieces because perhaps one day I could afford to buy another example of one or both them. Super expensive items can be stoppers for me.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • Sell none of them! Mortgage the house! image

And if you don't have a house....well....try for a personal line of credit or loan for the amount you need with the two smaller coins as collateral. Then if you get "in trouble" again while paying off the loan for the two small coins...do it again with the BIG one and get your two small ones back again image Then if circumstances happen again...do the two small ones again image just like Credit Cards!!!!! image

I'd keep the one biggie (why would I keep the 'wannabe' coins?) image

Hmmmmm. Seems NOBODY is thinkin: "da bigger dey is, da harder dey........"

Nope. Well, maybe a couple. I'd let the biggie go. Then still have some variety to look at. And the possibility of lettin one of THEM go also....maybe. Just more options as I see it.

The scenario is kinda close to home -- my top three are a little like what you're describing, although the numbers are off by a power of ten. I'd get rid of the biggie. It's the coins I like, and more or less equally at that, not their theoretical pricetags -- so I'd do the thing that leaves me with two of three to enjoy.

I'd sell the one $50K coin. Assuming they all have equal potential, the chance of the $25K coins appreciating in price is probably better. And the liquidity of the $25K coins is probably better, even if $25k still is a lot for most dealers on a single purchase.
