Your opinion on the PCGS registry vs. NGC's?

I started a registry set at NGC for classic commemoratives. I buy both PCGS and NGC slabbed coins; therefore, I think that NGC's rule of allowing either makes sense.

Would you say that for anything accept maybe moderns (where PCGS is thought to be tougher?), NGC's policy of accepting either service's coins is more appropriate and better for the collector?

What's your take on this?

Here we go again.

I guess it gets to a point of who really cares anymore. Either you like one or both or you do not like any of them and the participants. Why does enjoyment, for most, have to be turned into a Joe Blow versus Joe Sucks situation.

I like them both. They are a great way to keep track of your coins. To me it is like an online Whitman folder. I get a kick out of adding a coin.

I know people get caught up in the competitiveness of trying to be higher ranked and than can cause people to rationalize silly purchases, but all in all, I like them.

Most everybody also knows what my opinion on Ngc vis a vis Pcgs is.

I dont agree that PCGS coins be allowed over in the NGC Registry.

Why ? Mainly because you could have TWO top 10 registry Proof sets and only own 5 coins !

Cracking the top 10 on either side aint exactly cheap,but why should smoebody be able to just out wallet you with 5 coins ?

While i do agree that PCGS tends to be tougher on CAMS,hence the coins are nicer (did i say that ? ).

I have chosen what i feel is the higher ground and endeavour to build a top 10 set on both sides of the street using 5 NGC coins and 5 PCGS coins !

Once that is done i am going to start on an 1857 MINT set for the PCGS side (fact is,i have already started the project)
That consists of 36 coins and i suspect will take me 10 years to complete.

But i can assure you that my PCGS coins will never appear in an NGC registry !

In my opinion, both grading companies are equal in reputation and quality of product. Therefore I am bewildered that it is apparently quite difficult to cross from one to the other especially in the higher MS grades. One being NGC and the other being PCGS. IMHO, I think the respect that most if not all collectors have for both companys, should filter to the cross-over procedure being more likely to occur, especially for those trying to build sets or collections in the same slab . And yes, I feel it is better for the two companys to allow each of the two for registry sets.

I myself have no regisry sets on either site myself, although I am putting together a set of Morgans in PCGS and NGC myself......

I participate in both but lean towards the NGC set more as I want to buy the coin and not the holder.....some times the best coin is in an NGC slab.............sometime a PCGS. I don't care if my sets are uniform I just care about the coins so NGC's Registry suite me better because I am not peanilized for choosing the coin that best fits my set.

The Registry is all about chasing numbers and spending crazy money for so-called higher graded coins which, in many cases, are not the prettiest, most attractive coins. It's about generating revenue, pitting and exploiting human behavior patterns...in this case, Pride and the spirit of competition which can and often lead to insatiable compulsions.

To think that there was once a time when owning a Choice Brilliant Uncirculated piece was quite gratifying yet now, GEM BU MS 65s are looked down on as though "common". Then eventually 66s are no longer good enough. "Gotta have 67s" in certain series' ( a grade that could very well be wrong, just as the 66 could and should be a 67 in many cases.) Then there comes a time when the registry participant just HAS to be the owner of Pop Top 68s, 69s, 70s.

It's insanity and exploitation in the name of money.....a marketing tool that has worked too well. Populations continue to rise and that once valuable asset known as your collection is now commonplace and not worth squat. I suppose the goal of the creator of this concept known as "The Registry" has not only been realized, it has surpassed and exceeded all expectation.

I haven't updated or looked at my NGC Registry Sets in over a year.

I'm more enthused with my PCGS sets

My take is that the PCGS registry is akin the NCAA college basketball tournament, while NGC's is like the NIT tournament.

Most folks here give the edge to PCGS over NGC by most criteria for which the two are compared and judged. That being said the NGC Registry would be a LOT less than it is today without the allowance of PCGS holdered coins because the folks at NGC know that most collectors aren't going to cross their PCGS coins over to NGC. By allowing NGC coins in the PCGS Registry there is no incentive to try to cross them to PCGS unless PCGS would give a lower weighting to the NGC holdered coin than it would to an identical coin in a PCGS holder. Again the incentive is economic. HRH knows that there are nice coins in NGC plastic and I'm sure he would love to see those in PCGS plastic.
I like the feature at NGC where you can see how many have viewed your set, the larger size limit for pics and you can have both obv and rev pics.

This has probably been discussed before but I think PCGS should allow collectors to submit their NGC coins for "registry crossover" service. If the coin crosses at the same grade it is reholdered in a PCGS slab if not PCGS leaves the coin in the NGC slab but issues a PCGS registry grade for the NGC cert number and you can add the coin to your set at the assigned grade. This wouldn't be all that difficult to manage and it would generate additional submissions for PCGS.
