I have owned 2 in the past. One was a nice PCGS 63 RB and the other was a PCGS 63 Red.
Never could quite step up to the next level.

According to a post from yesterday, somebody just paid $92,000.00 for one in MS-67, Red.
At the risk of starting another modern vs. classic brushfire, I let my emotion sign do the talking for me.
Personally I graded the coin VF-30.

Since your name is Lincolnfreak, I wonder if this was made in jest? If not, I would have to argue that point with you. There appear to be an awful lot of people that collect coins, that have heard of the 09-sVDB since childhood, and drempt about one since childhood. This means when they get to that point in life when they can actually plop down a bankroll and become proud owner of a dream coin, they will and do.
That hardly seems over-rated. Seems more like the things that dreams are made of.
And over-priced? Simple supply and demand. There are a lot of 09-sVDB coins out there, but apparently there are more collectors that dream of owning one (or more).
It's a cool coin, that has a legitimate place in the hearts of many collectors.

BTW I have a PCGS VF35 that I bought raw as a VF30 in 2001. I wanted one since the 1970s.

The F-12 is a Die 4. The VF is a die 3.
Both are raw.

nankraut, there were several obverse dies used for the 1909S VDB. I forget exactly how many, but this would account for the MM position variation.

I believe that there Are 3 different positions for that MM if I'm not wrong.
I have a PCGS MS63RB one and have been considering listing it on Sleazebay.
4 different dies on the S-VDB. Best reference is the out-of-print "Counterfeit Detection" reprint from the Numismatist (Vol. II) 1988. Pages 42 and 43 have superb photos of the 4 positions of the mintmarks as well as all diagnostics for the 4 genuine dies.
I have seen several threads indicating the S-VDB is overrated. Perhaps . . . but it is overrated by thousands of collectors who clamor for one. Seems like a textbook definition of rarity as a function of supply and demand?

No, my post was not made in jest. JMHO. You've explained your viewpoint very nicely, I just don't feel the same way. I probably should not have stated that it is over-rated. I certainly agree with your contention that many collectors consider it "special" among coins. I do feel that it is over-priced relative to availability. Not trying to ruffle any feathers as I am new to the boards.

I remember counting 09-S VDBs in last year's Heritage ANA catalog. There were 26 for auction!
Many years ago I bought one from a guy who had pulled it out of the Paducah Ky Coca-Cola plant incoming change bags. I had it graded as legit by ANACS, back in the days when the ANACS certs had photos but no grades. I sold it a few years later. It was a nice pretty light brown F or VF
Yes, they are often available and the price is too high. Even so, I'm still semi looking for a nice gem. DLRC had a 66 a few months ago. I thought about going for it but it sold before I could make up my mind
