You know i once had the chance to buy a mediocre one, but in the end history got the better of me cos i bought a noble instead.

It was a hard choice but the way i figured it, Gothic Crowns are not realistically coins as they were never intended to circulate and are technically commemoratives and thus it swung my decision away from buying one.

Oh my god that is hideous, the toning... yeuk. Where's that one been left? It needs a good long dip. Nice design, terrible tone. Too much of a muchness.

Ah that one's not as bad, still not my cup of tea though.

I'm not a fan of coloured toning at all, i can live with a little on hammered coins as long as it's subtle, the word subtle is the biggest thing for me.

I don't like toning that bowls you over because i find it detracts from the design. This doesn't mean i like blast white coins either though as they can look just as unnatural.

It just means i feel happy with natural grey scale toning with little to no colour, i'm not too keen on red much nor bright colours. Coins with darker coloured toning are much more preferable to me. The nicest Gothic Crown i ever, ever saw was the one that had been for sale by Lawrence Chard, it was an absolute gem. A nice even blue tone, dark steel blue into grey, and i have never seen a coin that i have liked the look of so much in my life. It was gorgeous.

And here's a picture of it. I would honestly say this is the nicest British Crown in existence anywhere in the world.

My dream would be not to own any Gothic Crown, but THAT Gothic Crown, even if it's just for a week, it would make me a very happy and fulfilled collector.

Syl, it looks pretty hairlined to me! I hate hairlines. That doesn't mean I wouldn't own that coin if someone gave it to me, however!!

Speaking of hairlines, the original Gothic in this thread is described as having hairlines under the toning. If that's true, how did it garner an MS64 grade??

The hairlines are probably from years in a velvet lined drawer, but since if i bought it, it'd be going into another velvet lined drawer i doubt it'd matter much to me.

Cabinet friction and hairlines are two entirely different things, and this coin displays excessive hairlining from multiple polishing. Cabinet friction is evident only on the raised surfaces of the coin, and not in the fields, where this coin is scratched. Yuk!!

It certainly looks hairlined, perhaps even retoned at first glance. Syl, I suggest you look at cacheman's PR66 crown if you want quality.

There's an exceptional amount of colorfully toned Victorian coins in this auction, often grouped together in the lower denominations, tempting lots!
