Dealers: How closely do you stick to your return policy?

Say you offer a seven day return privilege. Buyer wants to return coin after say, 10 days. Coin is PCGS or NGC slabbed, and buyer just doesn't like it. Lets assume that this is a new customer, that you have not done business with previously. Would you take it back for a full refund?

I am a collector, not a dealer, but I would take the coin back under those circumstances, and I would expect the coin to be taken back. It is the spirit of the return policy, not the precise terms.

I would say the policy is unrealistic. I offer 30 days when I sell.

I, as a member of the PNG, offer a 14 day return privelege to collectors. If asked, I can be a little fluid with that, as well.
PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

    Mark,

I note that your handle is "Great-Service" and you advertise "The Best Return Policy in the Business" in your listing. Quibbling over 3 days would be neither.

Ryk: I have taken a PCGS slabbed Morgan back after 6 months, for a full refund. I am extremely generous in my policy, as I also pay shipping both ways on returns. I am just asking what the other fellas do.

Heck you can always have two different Return Policys like a clown I know has. That way you can stick anyone with a POS if you want to.

I don't know why anyone would need more than 5 days to decide if a coin is a keeper or not. I can usually tell in about 5 seconds if the coin is a keeper or not though I have kept one or two that I probly shudda returned. Unless the buyer runs into some unexpected hardship after a month or longer and you want to repurchase the coin thats another matter.

We have a policy that we try to conduct business with in all cases. That is to keep our customers happy. We have never refused to take a coin back.
We have stated a 10% return fee, yet have never charged it.
I learned a long time ago if iI keep my customers happy, I will get their future business. This always being more important than profit or loss on any one transaction.

Mark, knowing you as I do from here, that's what I would have expected. image

    Edited:

Legend has been very generous with her return policy. For those of you who do not know Laura, her bark is much, much worse than her bite.

Tom, most experienced collectors know as soon as they pull the coin out of the package if it's a keeper or not. It's my position that most of these guys who want to return a coin after several weeks have shopped it around.

If you can't make a decision within 3 days you shouldn't be collecting. Personally, I make a decision within 30 minutes...or less...often much less. Many of those who try and return coins after an extended period have probably tried to "flip" the coin unsuccessfully.
    All glory is fleeting.
