Moderator - Can we split this forum into two separate ones?
I could care less about world coins but I find ancient coins fascinating. I'm sure there are others who feel just the opposite. It would sure be nice having two separate forums rather than lumping these apples and oranges together.

I personally do not see the advantage or the necessity of 2 separtae forums.
I am not a collector of ancients but read most of the threads. Many on here collect both Darkside and Ancient and it would seem to me just to be an imposition to them to need to use 2 different forums.
Seems simple to me to just not open a thread about ancients if there is no interest.
This is just my observation, not meant as any criticism.

So i'd still have to use both forum areas! So it'd be more work for me if they split them.

The good thing about splitting a forum if there is enough interest is that it would probably attact more specialists and maybe more participation leaving both sections stronger.
The bad thing about splitting a forum if there is not enough interest is that it would probably wither and die leaving both sections weaker.
For Exonumia (medals, etc) a split might work better because it could draw from more than just a subset of this area.
Just my 2 pence.
Edited to add: Does PCGS even slab ancients and exonumia? That might figure into the decision too. I don't know.

From the guy that knows all too well what he's doing on web forums. I agree with Stu, trust me splitting it would not work, it'd probably do more harm than good in the long run. To quote the key policy of conservatism...

I presume you mean't "couldn't" there, forgive me if i'm wrong but you seem somewhat hostile to world coins.* Any particular reason?
*Of which ancients are most definately a part of, there is fundamentally no difference from 'ancient coins' and 'world coins', the former are afterall coins of the world**, albeit a little older. Although as you'll note the period defined as 'ancient' differs from place to place, so how would you define a break on those lines?
**World being defined as not US.

IMO - bad idea.
My Website
"Everything I have is for sale except for my wife and my dog....and I'm not sure about one of them."
<< <i>However, I end up clicking on a lot of threads that by their titles could relate to ancients or modern world coins - so for me it is time consuming and I could care less about some Monarch's head from a few decades ago. In the same spirit I wish the US Coin forum would split too so I could escape wasting time reading about all the modern junk >>
Carried to its ultimate point, your argument is that there should be a separate forum for modern Japanese coins, because that's my primary interest; one for Cook Island coins because that's what MadMarty loves; one for holed coins to keep LordM happy; etc. A few of those forums might even attract half a dozen members, instead of only one or two.
<< <i> but at least over there it is a little easier to identify from the thread titles the wheat from the chaff >>
Maybe so, but we are generally a friendly bunch over here, and even if we don't share the same interests, we often stop and admire what the other guy/gal likes too. Perhaps, for those of us who spend more time here, we can usually tell what the other guy likes in advance (for example, Roy and Japanese coins, and Elverno and Napoleonic medals). Wouldn't trade this forum for any other
'Sides, there are other websites that cater strictly to ancient coins.

All of the US coins are "Moderns".

From a UK point of view this is true, to us everything 1816 or later is modern. Which doesn't leave a great deal of the US series to be not modern, so 1793-1815 are Early modern!
Although i can see some of the original poster's argument about not wanting to look at everything, although i agree with him on the grounds because i'm on a slow dialup connection (pay by the minute) and as you can imagine it takes too long sometimes. Particularly the image posts, i usually just miss those due to the fact that i haven't got the patience to give the screen 10 minutes to load!
I think perhaps the best move forward would be to ensure that the title of each post indicates clearly what is within the post, which i think happens most of the time anyhow. Helps people like me avoid slow loading pages and keeps the phone bill down!

Syl, get broadband!!!!!! When I did, my internet bill was cut by 60-80% and I had much faster access and spent much more time online.

I don't think I would visit an ancients forum as I don't collect them; but I do enjoy the pics and posts of them so I'd miss them if they weren't here.
