True or false: A problem coin is more likely to be holdered at PCGS than NGC

RYKRYK Posts: 35,804 ✭✭✭✭✭
It's been my experience, anyway. I have had three coins now that have been holdered at PCGS (two with an unofficial net grade) that were BB's at NGC. I asked a dealer friend, and he said that my observation is consistent with his considerably more vast experience.

I do not have any problem with this, personally, so long that the practice is consistent. NGC has the NCS affiliate, in part existing to slab problem coins, so there is a natural outlet for them. PCGS has no comparable service. Perhaps, this is the reason that they will slab problem coins.

Any thoughts?

I actually have found PCGS more strict (in a limited sample of data)

I have found that PCGS is a bit more lenient on problem coins.

Only minor problems though...and that is generally compared to NGC.

My own submissions have been about an even split. I've had coins bodybagged at PCGS that graded at NGC. I've had coins bodybagged at NGC that graded at PCGS. I've had net graded ANACS coins grade at both services.

    Impossible to answer.

I've seen crap in both holders. From a bent key date Morgan in a PCGS holder, a Graffiti'd two cent piece in a pcgs holder, to a corroded jefferson nickel in an ngc holder that I just sent back to them this week.

The good news is that the Graffiti'd two cent piece was bought back by pcgs. The bent Morgan was cracked out at a shop because a large wholesale buyer thought it was bent, and the store owner didn't believe him. Boy, was he upset. Not sure what happened after that, but it was bent. I can let you know what happens with the corroded pf/Jefferson nickel and NGC.

It can go on and on. Those three coins are off the top of my head in 30 seconds.

ANACS is by far the stickest when it comes to problem coins. I sent two net graded ANACS coins to NGC and they slabbed them both without any problems. The first coin had "Rim damage" and the other was "lightly cleaned". Both problems were very minor and the coins were circulated precivil war gold. Naturally I cracked them out before I submitted them.

Purely anecdotal, but I have two 18th century large cents that were BB'd by NGC (for corrosion and cleaning) and holdered by ANACS with no net grade.

I see a lot more highly questionable toned or outright doctored up coins in NGC holders than I see in PCGS holders, especially some Peace dollars recently. I think NGC is WAY more liberal on holdering coins with very iffy color at best.

Suspicion only, but I believe a problem coin being sent to NCS will......"make it" into a slab at NGC.

The service is almost dependent on that being the case.

I am VERY against conservation and would rather own a NET graded ANACS.

    I....think..... NCS will destroy NGC.

Nobody else thinks that. Well one very respected forum member agrees, but other than him nobody seems to give a spit.

RYK---I can cite other examples. I am a US gold collector and am not experienced with how the grading services grade other series. I've seen gold in net graded ANACS holders that I had to look hard to find the problem on the coin which is noted on the label. My experiences are consistent with others on this board based on the poll going on in another thread which is addressing this issue.

That's a very bold prediction. NCS will destroy NGC. I don't think so. If anything, the NCS service adds value to the NGC/Collectors-society package.

If you were to say "Shop at Home will destroy NGC", that would be a much more plausable statement. Though, I don't really think that will be the case either.

In the tiniest of microcosms, yes. In the grand scheme of things, the original statement is accurate.

It depends on who is submitting it, I have bought pcgs coins already in holders that were dogs, and then sent in coins that I got screwed on that were severly undergraded, IT DEPENDS ON WHO IS SUBMITTING THEM,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

NGC is far more liberal on everything in my experience. Frankly, the fact that there is even debate on this topic floors me.

Speaking of NCS, I've seen a few of their before & after pics and thought they actually made many of the coins worse. One pic I remember in particular was a proof gold coin that had that really nice original proof 'haze' in the fields and looked totally beautiful and original, and NCS made it look like a modern proof.....yuk!

edited to add: and NGC probably bumped that coin a point too after NCS ruined it. image

In my somewhat limited experience, I have also seen a lot more coins that I felt should be BB'd for improper cleaning in NGC than I have in PCGS
