Would you break up an early Proof Set?
Here's a beautiful 1904 Proof Set that belongs to a friend, all coins are Proof65-67.

He wants to sell but thinks he could get more by breaking it up and selling the coins individually. What percentage over the set value (approx $30,000) would it take to get you to do the same?

I think he's wrong in two ways: 1) in wanting to sell the set and 2) in thinking he could get more by breaking it up

He said EARLY PROOF SET.....not MadMarty!!!!
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Marty's too ugly, but you're kind of cute.

<< <i>Personally... I would first get them into sequentially numbered holders, then sell em as a set IF I was going to sell >>
I think that practice is overrated - many so-called "original sets" are put together and then submitted for consecutive numbering. This one stands on its own merits, with or without consecutive numbering.

I can't imagine selling the set, much less break it up to sell it.
That is one great group of coins that your friend has.

I knew it, I knew it!!!! It wasn't the 1964AH sets I was standing near that had you drooling, it was me!
PS....keep that set together....I envy him!

Don't break it up - someone will pay a premium for the set.
.........like me!
Seriously though, I bought an original 1900 proof set in 65/66 grades and paid a 12.5% premium to CDN bid prices (higher than the sum of the parts). It would be sinful to break that set up.
I concur with Coinguy1 and TDN on this. If those individual coins
bring more at auction then the set would bring at least as much as those combined. If the set is attractive and no doubt orig, many larger dealers would step up to the buy the set as a lot once the individual coins first went off.

OH MY!
Beautiful MATCHED set worthy of a nice premium Together!
Marty always leaves the early sets for me...thanks Marty!!!
Anyway Marty couldn't get PF69DCAM out of this set, but it has more eye appeal than his PF69DCAM's.

Finest Toned Ike I've Ever Seen, been looking since 1986
I had left a bid and did not attend the sale. All of the silver coins had wonderful killer toning. I had underestimated the value of the silver dollar by about $3-5000 (rather than gem it was a superb gem). Hence I lost the set. I did end up buying the half from them and it graded NGC PF66 in 1988. I would suspect today that is either a 67 or a 68. This is one I keep on remembering as the set that got away. And now everytime I run into an original 1900-1908
Barber PF set, I immediately think back to what could have been.

WOWWWW ... BTW, was this the one you were promising if I gave up your icon coin! Heck I'll even pay for shipping!! Consider it a done deal!!!
Keep that thing TOGETHER!!!
think I'd cry if that set was broken up. Its hard enough trying to put together a pre-1916 proof set as it is. An original intact set should always remain together.

That's what I was thinking. My guess is they will one day be dipped and sold as shiny DCAM [yuk]
