Great story of a Russian hammered silver cache discovery

Forgive my ignorance about detecting etc, but are those coins a little too clean for having been buried for however long?

The reason I ask, is having worked in Russia for 2 yrs I know how "enterprising" they can be.

Great find! How were they "cleaned?"

Cool story. I don't see much corrosion on those pieces.

Cruzi, one of the reasons that silver has been prized for so long is that very reason. I've pulled 130-year old silver out of the ground that looked like it was dropped yesterday. A modern clad coin coming out of the ground after 3 years can be dark black. That's why your heart skips a beat when you see that glint in the bottom of your hole (plug)--you know instantly that you've found silver.

That's not to say they aren't faking something. But the final picture above is certainly the "after" picture. I'm sure those coins have been washed at the very least.

Edit - just searched on eBay, and wire kopeks from this period bring a whopping $10 to $20 each.
