HOLY CRAP! Have these people gone NUTS!!! MARTY SPENDS ALMOST $180 on a 1964 proof set!

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
1964 proof set at $100 so far, and five days to go!

image

I think it'll hit $250. Unless Doops comes along, then more like $500. image

My guesstimate ... PR67CAM minimum ... based on the small photo ... probably $250 - $300 on the set.

Impossible to tell from an image. Could be a hairlined dog. But, that obverse is off the charts; probably within the first five strikes off a fresh die. The reverse doesn't appear nearly as strong, but is likely also DCAM.

Reverse looks no more than CAM

    is it AH?

It's already way overbid, just look at the reverses (the half isn't a DCAM). I'll say $111.11

Nope. If it was, I'd have offered the seller a hell of a lot more than I did when I eMailed him 18 minutes after he listed it. image

Other than 2 sets in 6+ years of looking, how come the 1964 proof sets I look through at local shops and at shows do not contain a Kennedy half that looks like the one pictured in this thread?

I bet the half looks even better out of the mint cello.

I do not know what the winning bid will be but I would think it would go far above $300.00 with all of number of persons who troll for DCAM coins. I would gladly pay $10.00-$15.00 for it at a local shop.

Because Russ and Marty got there first.

I think somebody is going to be disappointed when it comes back CAM. Look at the shield on the reverse, it's not fully frosted the way I like to see them. But, it will go for stupid money. $300+ is my guess.

The obverse on that half rates a 10 out of 10 on the modern crap Dcam meter. Doops has his snipeware on lock-n-load at this moment.
Like everyone else, if it looks this good through 40 year old cellophane, wow!

    $325.

With you bidding on it? Russ.....I don't have enough for that bad boy.....I do think it will go higher than 68cam though......$500 is not a long shot at all.

Russ, my statement of my willingness to buy the set for "$10.00-$15.00 at a local shop" was a meager attempt to state the obvious.

    Was it obvious?

It will go for less than 200 and the winner will be disappointed. This coin is not a DCAM. The reverse is too light. JMHO.

Another thread posted today covers the topic of how absurdly, nay stupidly tight PCGS is on grading at this time.

If that is so, how would all of you react if PCGS graded the pictured 1964 Kennedy half as not even being a CAM (do the the weakness of the frost on the reverse) and simply a brilliant proof?

The Kennedy is nice but is it the only coin there worthy of a serious look? I do not buy and slab Proof coins so take what I say with a grain of salt. I think it will go for $326.89. We can all laugh together in 5 days but perhaps someone else will have the last laugh.

TTT, 30 hours have passed since this thread was originally posted. At that time there were only 7 bids. 30 hours later there are still only 7 bids.

What gives? Is it common on E-Bay to have some bidding when a new 7 day auction is listed, followed by days of no bids at all, followed by a 1 minute hyperbidding war between highly trained, battle tested E-Bay Coin Commandos/Numismatic Warriors utilizing the latest automated sniping technology to achieve victory?

I have never participated in E-Bay and would like to gain insight from those of you who have.

All the talk on this thread about the reverse not going DCAM may actually DECREASE the final hammer.

Man, the frost is just dripping off the obverse though. Might be worth it to buy and keep it raw as a showpiece!

From what I've read here about PCGS of late the reverse probably would'nt even cam.

I don't think there is a major amount of profit going to be made by the buyer.

If it's already higher than Russ offered,I'd stay away.

I bet if you tip it at the right angle in the right light, you can make the black part of the shield go away, making it a Cameo-like

I bet I could get that in a PR67 holder image

Wouldnt PCGS or NGC need both obverse and reverse to have DCAM to be designated as such even CAM for that matter.

One side only just would not get it.

TTT, once again just to keep the thread in front of everyone. A little over three days to go and the bids now total 8 in number. Anyone else care to take a stab at predicting the winning bid amount at this time (I think it will top $300.00), or are you simply planning on waiting to post your prediction until the last minute of the auction?
  • Options
    SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 13,001 ✭✭✭✭✭
TTT, once again to keep this thread alive.

About 49 hours to go and still only 8 bids. What a treat to observe the progress of a 7 day auction. It appears that a few bids are placed early and then not much action for days. If the auction is not prematurely terminated, I would be shocked if there is not a flurry of bidding that takes place at the end of the auction.

Anyone care to guess how long before the auction expires that a bidding war starts and how many bids will be placed during the war? My guess is that bidding will start 5 minutes before the end and that at least 18 bids will be placed.

P.S. If anyone on the forum places the high bid on the coin, please favor us with a picture of the half, front and back, out of the cello. Thanks.

    TTT, once again.

About 25 hours to go and still only eight bids. Anyone else care to predict when the last minute bidding starts and how many bids will be placed at the end of the auction. Again I predict bids will start with 5 minutes to go and there will be 18 total bids during that time. Also it will sell for over $300.00.
