A co-worker wants me to look at these coins and make an offer. UPDATE, NEXT BATCH OF COINS

DNADaveDNADave Posts: 7,306 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm very confident in what I'll pay for most of these coins, but the half is giving me some trouble. It looks very close to AU but has some type of crust on the upper reverse. I'd be a litte conservative and grade it XF with problems and offer around 70-75. Is that too much or too little. I wont rip this guy at all but will make as fair an offer as I can. I also told him to get at least two other offers before he accepts anything I say. I believe the fractional gold is fake but need a good resource. Any suggestions.

Pics are way too big. I'll resize them and get back to it.

The surfaces on that half aren't very nice IMO. Micropitting, environmental damage -- call it what you will, but I don't like them. I wouldn't go very high there.

Your probably correct in suggesting a few other offers first. One of my neighbors had a hugh pile of change laying around for years and I asked him if I could go through it for anything valuable. He let me go through them and there was really nothing there but after a year he still occationally brings up a little statement as to "are you sure you never found anything valuable in thoes coins?" He may be kidding but it is becoming an irritation, so let others make him an offer also. A few coins are not worth future discomforts.
From the looks of the photos I suppose that person is or was a coin collector so he to should know the value of the coins.

I should add, this is the first batch of what he says is about 40 pounds of coins. Should be very fun and interesting.

His brother had a pawn shop is Colorado years ago and he now has some of the leftover coins from the business.

The gold fractional piece is a fake. These were mass produced in the 1960's and are gold plated brass. The half dollar looks like it has serious problems with its strange looking finish. It may even be a fake. There appears to be raised bumps on the reverse field at 1:00 possition which is usually indicative of a cast coin.

You know, I was thinking that. It looks quite similar to some of those phony trade dollars, but I wasn't aware of seated halves having been faked in large numbers. In any case, not a nice coin.

The half weighs 12.37 grams. I don't know off the top of my head what the correct weight should be.

    Should be 12.44 grams

The half looks real to me, but it's corroded & should trade at a substantial discount, given that it is a relatively common date.

The half looks genuine but the damage/corrosion on the reverse is significant. Like Dorkkarl said, it might be worth about $40.00 IMHO.

How did you come to that conclusion? They are as fake as they come. Woolworth's used to sell them for $2.00 each back in the '60s and '70s. I think that most people would be as happy as pigs in poop if they could get $5 for those things.

To put things in context, Woolworth's charged $4.50 for coins that had a retail value of 75 cents. You can get an idea of what these replicas are worth from that.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

The half is real. Ebay is the place to sell it. The tokens are fake and would be priced about $1.50 by a serious seller. A knowledgeable buyer would not pay more than that, if anything at all.

Agreed. I FOUND one of those tokens on the floor at a coin show last month. I kept it as a curiosity, but if anyone wants to offer me $5 for it, PM me. image

The Silver dollars are cleaned on the obverse but reverses have toned nicely. There is some plated junk but also some neat gold. Will make for a nice weekend of looking at coins.

I'm 100% sure that the "California Gold" is fake. I know little about the Roman coin, it is very heavy but I suspect its ether bronze or a fake. It will take some research. The GAE's are fine. The eagle and indians will require a close look and a scale.
