Type set album?

HeywoodHeywood Posts: 1,246 ✭✭✭
I have been working on a type set with out having an album. When I went to buy a Dansco 7070, the shop owner indicated that they were for kids ( I thought that's who my Whitman was for) because it is incomplete and easy to complete.

I am looking for a type set album that doesn't break out every single Variety ( I don't want 6-8 of each the libert seated designs)

1).any suggestions that are "better' than the 7070?

2). place to buy (internet) below retail?

thanks in advance

The shop owner sounds like a jerk to me.
I have my type set in a Dansco 7070, and, believe me, I'm no kid.
Dunno where to get 'em below retail, however.

I've got a Dansco 7070 and I'm no kid either. I think it's a nice album that covers a nic selection of 200 years of coins.....Trust me if this album was for kids, I would love to see their allowance as this is not an easy (or inexpensive) album to fill.....Rick

I can only envy the kid who finds a Dansco 7070 collection within his or her means! Sure, it has no hole for a 1796 quarter, but in decent grades, especially with the gold insert, it is no trifling collection. I feel it is an attractive album, very worthy of adult consideration.

I'd recommend Brent-Krueger as well -- good folk there.

If you really want cheap, here's one for $16.09: Link.
  • Danscos are for kids!!!!! Get a Wayte Raymond Type Set Album. No there's a man's Type Set!!!

And if you are going to get the Dansco Album -- dont forget the gold page sold seperately!

I love the 7070... my album won't have impossible-to-afford coins, and the display is nothing short of classy. And it ain't a kid's album, unless there are lots of kids who can put multi-hundred dollar coins in albums image

I take it the dealer you went to did not sell Dansco albums. As others have said it is not a kids album (unless the dealer does not stock them). I'm certainly no kid and I love mine.

For kids? I'd like to see if he'd think that after looking at the coins in Baley's 7070.

What a schmuck (dealer) ! I think you'll find by almost every response, except Mr. TPN of course, he's a bigshot image, that the Dansco 7070 is pretty much the standard Type Set Album used.

I believe that an Intercept Shield Type Set album is either out, or is coming out soon? This one would be a good choice also.
Mr. Herndon would know if they're making one or not. I might be mistaken.
  • Hey Camaro Dude -- you didnt see the image in my post!!!!

I have a 7070!!! But seriously, the WR Type Set Album is impossible to do. I gotta post some pics of mine someday -- its still empty of course!

The shop owner is an idiot.

Off the top of my head, I believe the coins in my Dansco 7070 are worth about $15K. Not exactly a kid's collection.

I am on the band wagon too. 7070 is the way to go. Mine is also in the 15K range. I'd ask the dealer exactly what he thinks a type set should go into. Maybe he likes a Harris book. image

i picked up my 7070 in a local coin shop (colorado springs) in the used stack (only light scratches on the guard plastic on pennies) for 7.00

made my day! i've filled about 10 holes in the last 2 weeks - 1.00 toned modern coins, a couple semi key fine+ coins, and some very nice original au58 ones. i even popped a couple outa pcgs slabs! my only fear is that the plastic will cause wear on the coins or that putting them in there could cause the least bit of harm, but i LOVE my coins.

spending 60-150 bucks per coin now, this is the thing for me!

    Thanks all

I went with the 7070, with the Gold add on page, and the Silver shield slip cover, all from tradewinds- 25.29 + shipping.

Now I need to decide if I put in bright ms 20th century coins, when early stuff will be toned VF/XF.

I just found out I am getting a 7070 (empty of course) as a gift today. My wife ordered from Tradewinds and paid for express shipping, last Friday, but it didn't show up yet. 1st time order from them becuase they had the best prices.

I bought from Brent-Kruger in the past and they were prompt and good prices too. Amos isn't bad either as long as you get the "advantage price".

That shop owner who said they are for kids isn't just a half ass, but he may be an ass whole.

I have not collected type coins in albums for years. Most of my "holes" are in my head. (Hey that didn't come right. image

But seriously there is nothing wrong with collecting general types instead of getting down to the nitty-gritty that a total type set can entail. For me the most aggravating type coins are the 1873-4 with arrows dime quarter and half dollar. The coins are expensive, hard as hell to find attractive and to me pretty boring. Yes, I did fill those holes in my type set, but two of three coins would be “no grades” if I sent them in to NGC or PCGS. In other words I just filled the holes.

It’s perfectly OK if your album doesn’t have all the slots. And type coin collecting, especially if you collect most all of the 19th century coins, is not “kid stuff.”

I agree that the 7070 is for kids... as a kid I dreamed about having the coins in my type set album image

I have another suggestion for anyone looking to put together a type set in an album, but who is frustrated by all of the 'holes' in his or her collection. I used another Dansco album, the #7000 Stock Book, with pages for twelve 2x2s. I mounted the coins in either cardboard 2x2s or safe-flips, and placed them into the pages as I liked. I labeled the 2x2s with the appropriate information for each coin. I inserted printed 2x2 labels for each type, with any information, data or explanations, and made a truly customized type set album. By inserting blank 2x2 cardboard fillers, there were no 'holes'. By using this system, you can customize your type set album to be just as you like it, and can expand it as you acquire more coins. Just a suggestion.
