  smaller than a dime.

  the size of a type three one dollar gold is 15 mm
  
  and think of it this way if you had a gold dollar type three and put it on top of a roosie dime the gold dollar would fit with room to spare so you could still see an outline of the dime with the gold dollar sitting on top of the dime
  
  and the gold dollar is approx half the thickness of a roosie dime
  
  and the type one is even smaller diameter 13 mm

  The Type I gold dollar at 13mm is the smallest US coin ever made. The three cent silver is the next smallest US coin at 14mm.

  BUT the 3 cent silver coin weighs less -
  
  Therefore the Red Book calls it the smallest U.S. coin.
  
  The type one gold dollar has the smallest diameter, and it WAY smaller than a modern dime.

  Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

  The California fractional gold (should really be called small denomination gold since the $1 pieces are not "fractionals") were not issued by the United States. Rather they were privately issued. Also, the red book is wrong. The three cent sivlers are the lightest (weight) US coin rather than the smallest (size)US coin.
