Seems quite a few here own 1796 quarters...Post 'em if you got 'em!

How did you acquire yours????
I'll start. PCGS G4. I began a while back looking for one with this "look" and stumbled upon this one in Baltimore in December and hesitated at the price..........then thought more of it upon returning home and bought it shortly after with no haggling and paid what I thought was "dearly" at the time.
It seems as though nearly every one of these that I saw and have seen since then were Poor to Fair pieces, bent, harshly cleaned, or damaged in some way or just worn nearly beyond recognition. Taking that into account with the price I paid for this one, I think I lucked out. My pic is a tad dark. Mine is also the rarer of the 2 varieties or something like that as well.

gradewise they look nearly identical!
Same here.
<< <i> and they do look the same to me. Mine's an NGC VF25 >>
But, But, if one is in a pcgs holder graded the same how can this be? We all know.... ah never-mind.
Great coins guys!
No time limit.
Offer good til cancelled in writing.

Bill, and Barry Nice specimens , this is the grade range that I would want if I were looking to buy one, but now I dont think you could touch one like that for less than 30k. There is an Au-55 at Estes for 55k something, (I hadnt seen it yet, just saw it in his listing in coinworld)
Barry, is your coin from HLRC a few years back, it looks familiar??
jim
My 1796 was purchased off of ebay from a Rolex dealer who took the coin in partial trade for a new watch. He also took a 1795 half in the same trade and I ended up with both coins. The quarter was graded as VG by PCGS when I bought it, although I knew it was a solid, problem-free F12. I didn't have the cash free at the time for the coin so I asked the seller if he would accept two checks for the coin; one he could cash immediately for half the selling price and one he could cash in a month when I had a CD due. He accepted and actually waited until the CD came due before he cashed either check. As soon as the coin arrived I walked it through the PCGS table at the ANA and it came back correctly graded as F12. This was in 2001 and the coin's value has essentially tripled in that time.

<< <i>Barry, is your coin from HLRC a few years back, it looks familiar?? >>
Jim - I won it at auction from Superior 2-3 years ago. Could have been a HLRC coin at some point, I guess. They just go 'round and 'round... If it was, I'm happy, because HL outbids me on quite a few coins
I remember that coin. You had shown it to me at one of the Parsippany shows a while back. She's a beauty.
what is the scoop on B1 and B2??
what was the total mintage for all '96 quarters and how many of each type do you think still survive?
mgoodm3, I recall that piece on DLRC's site back then. Sure seemed expensive at the time. A FA2 sold on ebay not long ago for 42 or 4300!
B2 is a rarity 3 ( date equally spaced)
Total mintage aprox. 6146, the majority of the survivors being the B2 from the Col. Green hoard. The hoard consisted of about 200 B2's . Aproximately half were prooflike.
If I had it my way, stupidity would be painful!
I really like that for a FA2! It's much nicer than having only 1/35 of each side visible!
Thanks
Al
<< <i>My PCGS FR02. Very nice obv details but an almost non-existant reverse.
Craig, what's cool about yours is the most difficult part of the reverse, the head of the eagle (missing many times from much higher graded examples) is showing on yours!

Bustman - you bought the Whitney specimen, and then sold it?!? My respect for you reached new heights and depths in the same instance!

I believe that is a page from the Marvin Taichert catalogue? That was a truly amazing collection. I was an underbidder on the 1796 quarter, and have always wondered about its whereabouts. The 1796 quarter is one of the few major "holes" left in my type set -- I missed the Taichert coin, and prices have since doubled!
(TomB has seen my Taichert coin -- a 1795 eagle!)

I forgot to check back on this thread! some real beauties here not to mention quite a few overall!!!
EVP, I believe mine is a B1 using the explanation given by Bustman and comparing my 6 to the others.
[edit]*looks up the price of these things and has an aneurysm. I could pay off my college debt with one in G4.*[/edit]

Bustman I feel (some of) your pain. What killer colors. So few of these have any color at all.
I only had a shot at one of these in my day. Back in 1988 a VF with a light scratch or something was being sold at a small local auction.
Everyone seemed afraid of it. Me too! It brought around $10K as I recall. Probably was a big mistake letting it get away.

Low 6, much rarer than the high 6.
<< <i>no, it's a G4. >>
No it's G4u, you just added some value to your coin. R-6 Remember
what does R6 mean? I know it means Rarity and an approximate number but how many?
what's the story behind the different B1 and B2's? 2 dies?
<< <i>ok, now you throw something else out there that I don't know...
