This isn't normally the grade I collect,
but the toning and luster were just too
amazing for me to pass on this key date!
I bought this coin raw from a dealer who had recently purchased a complete set in mostly G-VG with a few F-AU coins scattered in. This was by far the nicest coin in the set. There is a very small hint of wear, so it should grade AU58. There are no hairlines anywhere, no major hits to speak of, and the luster makes it looks like a 64. This coin is just what you want your AU58s to look like! This grade is the best bargain in the numismatic world.

In any case I'd call the coin a MS61-63. It has NO attributes of an AU coin that I can see. AU's these days have rub patterns that look like landing pads. The cheek, forelock, and eagle's wing tips don't show obvious wear. I'll split the difference and say MS62. The O mints typically don't have full strikes, so some of the minor stiking issues on both sides should not be confused with wear. Great looking coin by the way. The fact that you say it has the luster of a 64 (i.e. full) tends to indicate it is MS63 or higher. Very few AU coins have the field luster of a MS64 coin. And typically the ones that do are sold by unknowledgeable people as such when they are only weak strikes.

Now that's what a Barber Half's toning should look like. Wonderful coin, Cary. Its one of the nicest 92-O's I've seen in high end AU/ MS.

Without having the coin in hand, its hard to tell. Looks like MS 64, but if there is rub, its the best 58 around !

It grades AU58 because of a teeny tiny bit of rub that is almost undetectable without REALLY studying the coin under a loupe. I purchased the coin raw and took it by the ANACS table for a quick verbal opinion. The guy told me "63-64ish"... and I walked away with a smile on my face!
