Not really a key date but the 55 DD Lincoln and only because it's the last one to fill the book.

    74-CC dime.
  • goose3goose3 Posts: 11,471 ✭✭✭
seeing how that is all I collect beside some civil war tokens, it is hard to pick just one.

I really like my 1796 quarter and my 1916 DDO nickel right now.
  • Well for me there are two categories......key's I won....and key's I have never owned....

As for Key's that I have owned I am kinda partial to the 1914-D lincoln................as for key's I would like to own but have never scraped up the money......1916-D Mercury Dime. image

1874-cc dime.........I'm with you on that one Barry! But since I cannot really afford that one anymore. Maybe 50-75 known and the majority are cleaned and damaged. I'd say the.........

1872-s quarter. The rarest "collectible" quarter imo. Probably 10X rarer than 1796, 1901-s, 1918/7-s quarters and much more affordable. One of the keys to seated quarters. Probably only 100-150 known and still very underrated. These have appreciated 5-10X over the past 30 years and still have a long ways to go. To make my key list a coin has to be truly rare, underpriced, and under ever-increasing demand. The so-called "common" keys do not meet this requirement as their pops are well into the thousands known...some in the tens of thousands. Sorry, just not "rare" enough to be key.

I don't have any key dates like a 55 double die or the 33 Saint, but I do have a mint defect, the 22 Lincoln cent, but it is die pair 3, so it is the weak version. I also have an 08-S IHC. Neither are close to being my favorites and both are somewhat circulated.

I just wanted to add, if I did have a 33 Saint, it would be my favorite image

I would have to say that the 1877 IHC that Brian Wagner has would be my favorite key date coin.

1858 three dollar gold business strike as there are only about 110 or so known and of those maybe 4 real true unc coins in the lower grades of unc and only a handful or less of proofs struck

1856 period one california gold round 50 cent large head of miss liberty maybe around 140 or so known

1864 three dollar gold business strike three dollar gold maybe 135 or so known

1834 proof cameo half cent maybe 18 known the new second mint was established in a new building with somewhat new equipemtn and 1834 was the first year of the diplomate proof sets made for countries that the usa wanted to trade with and the famous king of siam set was one of the first one made in 1834 a really historical set or any dated proof coins made at the philly mint in 1834 are cool

My sentimental fave is the 1877 Indian.

Roadrunner, I didn't know all that about the '72-S quarter. Is it tougher than a '64-S quarter, for example? Very interesting.

1928 Peace dollar, the only one that can begin to be considered an acutal rarity in the series. (instead of just a conditional rarity). It's not what you'd call actually "rare," but it's the rarest the series has to offer.

Among what I own, I guess my 1877 IHC probably wins, with the PCGS AU-50 1914-D cent close behind.

    1916 Standing Liberty Quarter.
  • Among ones I own -- that's a tough one. Both my 1911-D quarter eagle and 1872 two cent piece are in the running -- they both have a good story behind them which makes them more interesting to me personally.

My fav key is the 1856 $1. Sold mine last year (I think), and saw it recently worked on and in a higher grade holder. When I owned the coin, the luster had more pizzazz than it does now. image

The key to the Walker short set is the 41-S. My goal is
to own one in 66 and to get my set in the top 10. My current
one is a very sweet 64.

The 1911-D quarter eagle. The only expensive coin in the only gold series that can be completed without spending a fortune.
