How have your hobby interests changed over the years?

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 12,970 ✭✭✭✭✭
I thought this might be a fun topic and posted a thread about it a few minutes ago. However, like a dufus I was not paying attention and posted the thread on the Set Registry Forum. I am reposting it here, however I am lazy and do not want to retype the whole thing (I am somewhat "wordy", I guess due to my chosen field of lawyering, LOL).

Thus, in short, describe how you have progressedmatured during your years in the hobby (from newbie forward). I find that I need to change from being a collector/accumulator.

    From quantity to quality

My quantity has stayed about the same, but my emphasis on quality has definately increased. Any my knowledge has increased so I know what quality is, and what is just hype or misrepresentation....

I started out with a 7070 Dansco album
Moved to date and mint mark sets of anything and everything in fairly low grade (vg - vf)
Now collect type in a Library of Coins album (2 actually) most grading F - MS, (the chain cent and 1796 quarter lower), but looking mainly for nice looking coins that enhance each other.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I started collecting the modern stuff, Dansco albums of Jeffersons and Rooseys. then progressed into circulated Mercury dimes and Buffalo nickels. Then my dealer started showing me his nice stuff and my tastes started to change looking for the really nice stuff. Now I'm working on a set to put in the registry for half dimes.

Going more for quality over quantity. Could have been done with a nice Lincoln set quite a while ago, but I keep selling part of my set to be able to buy some killer upgrade.

From anything old to peace dollars. Then to just really nice peace dollars. From caring about the grade, to not caring about the grade a damn bit, only that it is real, not messed with, and looks nice. (you'd be surprised how often an MS63 can look better than an MS65) - but it can be so easy to slip into the grade snob mentality.

I think the most difficult thing for me was learning not to fixate on the keys that I couldn't afford, and appreciate the intrinsic and historical value of coins regardless of price. I just researched an old coin for a friend: an 1802 Philippine 8 reales coin - VG-F condition and not worth a ton but the history of it and wondering where it's been is cool.

    SanctionII,

You say you are a lawyer and I am not fond of lawyers as a whole, so I am responding here for the good of the forum.image
Age 6-9 collected pennies and put them into Whitman books.
Age 10-12 collected current nickels and dimes along with the pennies.
Age 13-16 started on the circulated Barber series, dimes, and quarters.
Age 17-25 chased skirts, too busy for coins.image Last years inherited the Barber Halves and Morgans.
Age 26-30 sold everything, including about thirty pounds of Barbers and Morgans, to buy a few 19th century type coins.
Age 31-54 went "nuts" about Bust series, eventually buying only slabbed coins.
Age 55-present still like the Busties but have concentrated mostly on slabbed Early Commems in MS64 or better. image
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

i am finding that at my old age, I am liking California Fractionals more and more.

    Why?

They are so tiny that if I buy an overgraded one or I am too optimistic on the grade of a raw one I always can blame my eyes. image

I have studied California Fractionals this past year and I find the auction prices all over the place, far too variable for me to spend my money.image

Ages 8 - 14 I collected the best 20th century type stuff I could afford - mostly unc. grades - no nice Barbers, no gold (save for one common date $2.50 I received as a gift.)

Ages 14 - 20 I collected records! (Still have most of them.)

Ages 20 - 29 I collected guitars! (Still have most of those too.)

Ages 30 - 32 (present) I collect coins again; the best 20th century type stuff I can afford - all unc. grades - I now have a few nice Barbers, and some gold (in addition to that common date $2.50 I received as a gift back when I was a child.)

I guess what goes around comes around...

When I was in high school I thought that I would be a totally satisfied collector if I could complete a set of Indian cents. I did that eventually, but then my tastes moved on, and I sold the set.

I've always had a strong interest in type coins from the time that I started to pay more than face value for coins. That interest is still there, and I continue to upgrade my type coins when the opportunity presents itself. It would be great to get a new type coin that I've never owned before, doing that now would require a 5 to 6 figure investment!

As for newer interests I got hooked on tokens and political items about fifteen years ago. I've collecting those since then in addition to the type coins.

Most recently I've been collecting the modern commemorative coins that came in cherrywood boxes. The set runs from the 1984 Olympics to the 1996 Smithsonian set. The Smithsonian set was the last of its kind. After that the wooden box sets went the way of the Indian cent because of a lack of interest on the part of the collectors.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
