How many coin collector folks are going to join PCGS currency

I just got my notice in the mail yesterday about PCGS Currency. For those that didn't, here's the deets:

1 year = $99, or $79 for current CC members
You get
- the new Whitman official red book "A guide to United States paper money" (Friedberg)
- A sample currency note in PCGS holder (no details about note)
- Submission privileges
- A voucher for 5 currency submissions (15 days, all submitted at the same time)

I'm not a currency collector, but I have 2 notes that I could submit. This is enticing me to at least find 3 more that I like and join for the premier year of the new service. I wanted to get the book anyway.

I was wondering if any other coin collectors are thinking of dabbling in currency b/c of the new service. Or maybe are already currency collectors. Any reservations to joining first year? Will it take them a few years to build credibility?

Yes I got the same mailing and I was thinking about joining even though I don't collect a lot of currency. I wouldn't mind buying a few nice notes and submitting them to try out the service.

currency doesn't interest me enough but i do have some early notes that could be submitted too. I should gain more knowledge as I don't know for certain if the notes I have are even worth submitting. I once had in my possesion an 1861 $20 large size demand note. To this day I cannot locate it and I hope it was a copy but I have a feeling it wasn't. if I still had that note I might be more interested in currency. image

I'm signed up. Currency is cool and a lot rarer than coins.

I have thought about getting involved into some currency, but have enough cookie jars I want to fill at the moment.

The only note I have was pulled from circulation and that was just a simple 1935 $10 I believe it was.

Not me ... looked into currency collecting a few years ago as I have known a local currency dealer for some time. Putting together a nice set of National Currency in decent condition would make putting together a set of Morgan dollars seem cheap in comparison. Large size notes are just about as bad ... all a matter of how well a note has survived over time.

Just to get an idea of cost ... go look at some of the auctions Lynn Knight has put on recently.

I'm pretty certain I'll be joining, but I'm strictly currency only at this point. I'd like to try it out.. see how they stack up. Right now there isn't a true TPG in the currency realm, so the entering of PMG and PCGS is highly anticipated by some. I don't think it'll take several years before PCGS to gain a foothold.. it may happen even sooner than that. They bring their strong reputation from the coin side.

Nope. Only currency I have (other than in my wallet) is a $1 Silver Cert. that looks worse than the one MadMarty won from Greg the Great!! image

Nope, I have only two notes that are collectable. I like notes and would enjoy collecting some but as mentioned earler in this thread the cost is steep. Not to mention the doctoring that goes on with currency.

Are you kidding. You can find notes with existing populations less than proof gold for less than it costs to own a worn 93-S Morgan. A PMG 65 note from 1864 just sold on ebay for 125 bucks, find me any coin that old for that price.

Currency is much rarer , much cheaper and much more attractive than most of the semi-common coins selling in the 4 figure ranges today.

I'm going to join. My primary interest is coins but I's like to collect a fractional currency set and most are affordable in high grades.

I got the stuff today but I'm not interested. My brother might be as he collects some currency but I'm not much into it.

Well, I think that PCGs looked at grading currency a number of years ago and concluded that it wasn't that financially rewarding but apparently they've rethunk it and they're going to do it. That's good and bad. Good because they may add some stability and respectability to currency grading (something that could be improved upon). It's bad because of all of the notes that are out there in CGA holders that may not cross into PCGS holders....but hey, it's only money.

So are the holders going to be hard or soft plastic and breathable or airtight?

Not me. I didn't even re-up with the Collector's Club after they did away with the freebies at the gold level.

I don't collect currrency. But always keep an eye out for solids in my everyday currency. These bring a high premium. I am interested in currency. If I was to buy any currency it would be the 1899 $5 Chief or the 1901 $10 Bison. I love these series.Bison or chief

One day I probably will buy these, but not in the near future. My collecting budget is very limited for now. I am going cold turkey on coins for at least a year now. So I guess I will have to start checking out the currency forum soon and see what's happening over there.

The sole purpose of currency is to purchase coins.
