Cheapest (decent) coin digital camera?
Okay, so I'm a cheapskate. Actually, I'm hanging on to my nice Canon Rebel EOS XS SLR camera (non-digital) for the time being and holding out for its replacement, an 8-11 megapixel SLR that won't require a second mortgage. While I'm waiting, I don't have a digital camera to do any coin photography. What would you guys recommend as a halfway decent digital camera that can do macro shots and give me enough detail to be somewhat happy with....and how cheap can I get it? I'm thinking this camera will essentially be a throw away in a year or so.

It pretty much sucks for anything other than macro work, though.

<< <i>As I replied to your thread the other night, the best bang for the buck right now is the 5 megapixel Nikon 5400. Under $500 with a $200 rebate. >>
I appreciate the previous replies. Basically, that pointed out what type of features I need to look for in my replacement (family/hobby) camera and current price range. I don't have too much extra (ick...like I have any extra!) money to spend so hence this thread. I want to see what I can "get by" with for the near term. I'm getting really itchy to do some of this photography that I've seen in these forums. That Ricoh camera is looking more and more attractive!

That doesn't sound like "throw away" money to me.

I don't know, about $290 after rebate seems cheap to me. And as you pointed out, that Ricoh has a bad rap for indoor/outdoor family type images.

So the picture is too blurry, I can't read the model number on
the camera.

Okay...nothing on the Net...I guess it's a bit old. Can anyone tell me some of the latest eBay prices on this camera (we're prevented access to any auction houses from work...Big Brother is watching).
And another. Ends sooner!
I got mine off eBay for around $60 about a year and a half ago.

I move them around until the coin looks correct in the viewfinder.

the RDC4200 is good at macro...great at macro is more like it.....but sucks for most everything else........the RDC-7 is a good cam for more than just macro.....if you just doing coins....go cheap cheap cheap
I think all of the newer cameras are fine.
Lighting is the KEY !

I just bought a Nikon 5400 - very nice, but is taking some time to learn about all the features.
