I backed down off my 20 set order and only ordered 5. I have a strange feeling that I will be kicking myself in the butt in about 2 or 3 months. The important thing is that I got 1 set for my unborn child that will be born sometime in mid-October. What to do with the other 4......hmmmmmmmm.

They will accept your order, but it will say item is backordered...don't worry, they are happy to charge you and collect the interest until someone returns some sets! My order was processed, but indicated a "Backorder" That was within one hour of the site actually allowing orders to be placed. We'll see.

Crazy is the only word for it. I just ordered 11 sets ($44.00 face) for just over $100.00. That is the definition of crazy. I saw nothing about a sellout on the mint's web page.

I just ordered as well.....and there was no mention of a backoder on the invoice...I ordered 3 set image

I was just told on phone that they are ALL backordered 4-6 weeks . . . to be on safe side. When I asked about the 3/15 date, she said they like to leave that 4-6 wk. window to CTA.

  • Options
okay, so when it (the web site) says "...in stock and reserved" does that mean that it should ship soon (within a few days), or does that mean a few weeks?

    Thanks for your thoughts.

    Man,

A lot of whiners in a bunch of threads.
Backordered in this case, and a lot of other cases by the mint, does not mean they are sold out of what they will make and you only get them if they are returns.

It means demand exceeded existing supply. I'm in Korea and due to the timezone difference, I didn't get my order in until about an hour ago. But, that is fine with me. They will get to me soon enough (and I ordered a few other things so I still get my instant gratification). I will likely get those items right after I get back home from this trip.

For the nickels....I will get them in a few weeks most likely. It isn't like these are part of a special item or set.

Should be interesting to see how the prices go though.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

They have these "on sale" dates and they don't seem to jive with the shipping dates. I have noticed this on the few things that they sold this year. I think the Sac dollars were backordered. I did end up getting them.

Remember, there is nothing special about these rolls except the wrapper. If they did sell out of their inventory, don't you think they would go over to the bag, scoop some more out and send it through the roller? They make a lot more money on selling these rolls at 2X face than selling to the Fed Reserve.

FYI, I just ordered mine and backordered until 3/15

The Mint is selling these for double face!! Why not wait a few weeks and get them at the bank?

Just ordered 5. Can't wait to get them. Who cares if their backordered. They'll all come in time.

I want some proof ones! I really like these coins. I also seem to be in a minority in that I like many of the new Quarters too.

It's not like I'm in it for the money as I only ordered 15 sets. I think they will easily double once sold out and I can dump half to pay for all of them. Put the rest of them away for twenty years. These will not come down in price.

I'm going to wait until 3/3 when the Proof Sets are released...if they are still availaible I'll probably get a roll or two.

If I felt really lucky, I'd wait untill the 15th and add the Proof Silver Eagle too...image

That's what I wanted to do too but so many people said that they were ordering that I got worried I wouldn't be able to get any so I bought mine today. That's ok though. I split the shipping 3 ways with people

Exactly - that's the way it's been going lately - sometimes I think they do this on purpose to create a hubbub and increase sales.

Do I just not get it? They can make as many of them as people order. People are paying multiples of face and ordering gazillions of them, so they'll never be remotely scarce. Demand can't ever be higher than it is with the excitement around the release -- can it? Buying them seems silly. Don't get me wrong -- I dutifully lay in a few rolls of each new quarter (and last year's nickels) at the bank and I don't feel too bad since they can only tank as badly as the dollar in general, no worse -- but it seems like the least likely thing in the world to appreciate. There will be millions upon millions of them preserved in mint state. Am I completely out to lunch on this?

It seems to me that theres a lot going on that defies conventional wisdom. I bought 15 sets at more than two times face value. I think the reason I did was because I am sure these will sell out fairly quickly, and a quick short term profit is likely. Although these nickels are the same as those that will appear in banks soon, they differ in the wrapping. And when people come to these late, as many people will, these Mint Issues will be easier to move.

I dont know how many sets they will make, but I'm pretty sure they arent going to be making more, or taking them from bags and rolling them up. I'll be happy if they double from issue price when they sell out. Ill sell most and keep a few for myself to stash for 20 years.

    Does that make sense?

No. You are correct. The thing is that hoarding will go on for a long time. Mint state examples will always be there. But in the short run these will be great. And the reason the mint doesn't just keep making as many as people order is because they want to keep sales high by making things sell out which in turn makes their products more desirable.

All this talk gave me an idea for the U.S. Mint. Why don't they cherry pick the coins and make the profit on them. It seems to me they are the market maker of market makers.
  • Options
just like those sets they sold a few months ago, nothing special or of particular value, but limited and once they sold out the short term profit was amazing.

A mintage in the millions doesn't necessarily equate to a low value. Look at the modern Proof sets, like the silver 1999 set.

Just bought mine now. Says they will ship on 03/15/2005.
  • Options
If you're a dealer or are going to sell in the short term, go ahead and buy them. If you're a collector who doesn't have a lot to spend, get some rolls from the mint and stash them. Simple.

I just ordered 3 sets and personally like the new design. As many have said, mine are backordered also.

hmmm . . . I just picked up 20 rolls at the big release event in DC. They're a bit disappointing in that they have more contact marks than I would have expected--from only opening one roll.

There were dealers (I assume) carting away thousands of them--there was no posted limit on how many you could take away, and the news said they had $100,000 worth there.

I just called the mint to check on my order that I confirmed yesterday - only because their online tracking system said it could NOT find my order! She had it tho, and said to call back in a few days, that it would probably be shipped by then. L)

Sure wish I could have scored some of those nickels in Washington - they should do that in the one horse towns sometime. My little hometown bank here never has jack. I have to go to 'town', to my other bank, and still having a difficult time.

Yahoo Story said some 97 million coins being shipped from FED to the regional banks.

kellymac - At that event they were selling the bank wrapped rolls at face, correct?
  • Options

Yep, face value. We saw everything from the early risers and their laden carts to people buying 1-2 rolls, but the majority I think were in the 10-20 roll category like myself, with a good number buying 100-roll boxes. Just people interested enough to send to relatives, or who had a set of early buffaloes from a relative and wanted to complement them. I'm surprised that the bank-wrapped rolls aren't making it onto ebay yet!

The Mint determines to sell a pre-set number of sets (like 500,000 or something). Why don't they make more when they sell out? Dunno, but they don't (at least they never have, ever, on any issue--to my knowledge at least).
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

I'm sure that the mint sets a predetermined amount for mint sale and bank distribution. They have to do this since even though these are nickels with a 5 cent face value they are still legal tender. The mint cannot flood the market with these nickels due to the demand. Its like printing hundred dollar bills just for the hell of it. It would destabilize the US economy.

Just my 5cents on the matter.

By the way has anyone seen these nickels available in banks in the Philadelphia, PA area? Around here it looks like I have a better chance of finding Jimmy Hoffa than these nickels in bank rolls.
