How about reducing the size of your sig line images?

I know this topic pops up every once in a while and draws mixed reviews but here goes.... If you are a user of this forum that has large images in your sig line please consider reducing the size or number of images. It's a real killer for users with slow connections, small screens or low speed Internet connections.

Thank you for your cooperation image

I'll second that! I love coin pictures but big ones don't belong in sig lines.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Have you ever considered high-speed connections? If you can have coins as a hobby, I think you can afford high speed internet.

Well, Carol had already laid down instructions on size but it is often forgotten. I'd like smaller sig pics, too, and I have high speed at work and home.

I do have high speed Internet, at home and at work. Sometimes I use my wireless PDA and those are slow with small screens. I know there are other users who either can't afford high speed or it is not available in their area. Please try to consider other users.

Sorry about that. I honestly didn't know there was a guideline.image

I'm not having so much trouble with loading time anymore, but the size of
some make the post very difficult to read.

  • no problem with loading here, I don't like to scroll right to read the thread or look at pics.

As a rule when I see a thread that I need to scroll right I pass and move on.

"afford" is not the issue where I am located - it just is not available in a one horse town.

Hear! Hear! I agree, some of them are getting ridiculously large. C'mon guys/gals...be reasonable!

Is mine too big ? Wouldn't want to slow anyone down.

I'm on probably one of the worlds worst dialup ISP's and have no other choice until I change puters.

The only thing that I can see that slows me down are things running. image

I agree. No big sig pictures, and especially no animations in sigs. It's clever the first time, amusing the second, and annoying every time after that. Cut it out.

No more than four patterns allowed per sigline.

Worse than larger images are people who link them to dead dog slow servers. <cough>AOL</cough>

Relative noob here, are my pics too big (per guidelines) or do I need to shrink em?
  • ERER Posts: 7,345
Dave, your pic is already DNA sizeimage, so it's OK. Ken, your large sig pic offends me, man.image
  • Sig lines........get rid of em you slackers!!!!!

  • I agree, I've removed my flashing Frankie. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if images in the sig line were done away with. For example, they get in the way when you want to print off the occasional good thread image and they cause undue scrolling with no real value add. Just my two Lincolns.

I would also like to see the girlie pics and the stupid sigs (for example, that one about masturbation) go away.

Some of us check the forum during the day at work, and it doesn't look good if someone happens to be walking by and sees that stuff image

Personally, I prefer links in the sig line (like mine). Most of us have seen each other's sigs hundreds or thousands or times already. If I'm interested, I'll click on it to check it out.
  • As long as someone has a sig line like mine, I'm happy. If not, its offensive.

Hey in this great land of giant deficits and debt, high speed net availability is nearly as bad as 4th world countries.

That in fact is the ONLY hold up to us investing in a 2nd home in western North Carolina is the lack of broadband where we would like to buy.

    Amazing huh?

myqqy: how about just one or two weasels instead of 7?

  • Or you could use these that are about 20K total instead of 150K.

Sorry for being slow-witted, but I'm not following you there- the pictures in your post are the same size as mine.........image

  • myqqy, the physical dimension size (like 2 inches by 3 inches) is the same between your images and the copies spiny posted, the difference is the File Size. The file size can vastly affect how quickly these pages load for those on dial up, the difference between 20k total (spiny's copy of yours), and 150k (yours) is HUGE. I don't see much of a difference in image quality, you should really considere replacing yours with the copies spiny generously shrunk.
Varieties are the spice of a Type Set.

    Need more $$$ for coins?
  • I resaved them using more compression. They are the same dot per inch, but the file size is way smaller.

  • wow The pics look the same and the file size is vastly smaller....very cool!

So, not being especially computer savvy... how does one take 2 pics with 150k and reduce that to 20k? (for future reference)..........image

  • I don't see what all this crying is about. Look, switch to the Firefox web browser and use the Adblock extension. That way, you can block any particular image you don't want to see: ads, sig line pics, the PCGS forum banner, doubleclick spyware -- anything can be blocked using Adblock, including Flash animations. And you can block any image from the most prolific posters, including annoying avatars. You get it? You can block anything -- anything -- you don't want to see or takes too long to download.

I tire of the dialup whiners trying to sink the rest of us to the lowest common denominator. If your connection sucks, deal with it, either in the manner I just described or any way you see fit.

  • It's a setting in the imaging software. I'm not sure if it's a standard feature on all programs, but Paint Shop Pro lets me set the amount of compression to use.

  • Yes, and I've just posted the perfect solution. So any dialupper can block ALL sig images if they so choose. I say again, you can block ALL sig images. ALL SIG IMAGES CAN BE BLOCKED if you wish.

Just do a modicum of research to fix your problem, and it's solved.

Hmmm, I've already had two complaints about my sig picture, even though it is well below the max size that Carol mentioned. So not only do we have people complaining about the size, but also the content.

Of course you do -- because the numbskulls around here won't take but ten seconds to learn how to use the "off" switch on their web browsers. Instead, these roving Ministers of Propaganda would impose their will on us. Well no thanks, Ministers -- learn how to use your f-ing computers and stop whining.
