Were these sent from Heritage? If so, perhaps Heritage has its own insurance that covers use of Fed Ex???? Not sure how this works, but would be very surprised if a company like Heritage would go shipping coins uninsured of that value.

Then why in the hell would you use FedEx??? image

<< <i>Then why in the hell would you use FedEx??? >>

You would use them for fast, efficient shipment of the merchandise.

Dealers who use Fedex typically have their own insurance policies which cover Fedex and/or Express Mail shipments.

However, besides the inconvenience and possible increase in insurance fees (or the possibility of being dropped from the policy) in the event of a loss, the insured is also out the amount of the applicable deductible.

2 to 3 business days anywhere in the US via USPS registered mail, I consider to be fast, efficient, and "safe." But, that's just me... image

That doesn't mean it made it to Memphis.
I lost some coins using Fedex. The employee explained to me that the packages are shipped in crates and the crate is scanned, not each individual item. That parcel could have been lifted anywhere along the line.

Fedex is the worst way to ship coins IMHO

  • Should E-Bay be notified about this in case someone is stupid enough to put an ID number someplace in their auction? Maybe E-Bay could scan the auctions quicker than one of us could. Also, with them knowing it make prosecution a lot easier once the douche-bag(s) is(are) found.

I'm sure others that do not read this board as well as some that do will confirm that Fed-X has a very big problem with inside jobs and missing packages or packages delivered empty. I've had three such incidents in the past 8 months, 1 recovered thank goodness, and am working very closely with the higher-ups at Fed-X both on a corporate level and from a security standpoint. They definitely have a big problem and they are keenly aware of it. Prior to 8 months ago I had no losses for over 9 years.

I should have thought enough to post the coins in my last package to the boards here.....great idea!

Hi Mike....glad you are here with us.....the members of the board are great at sorting out the good, bad, and the ugly...if the coins are out there...I bet one of the board members has a hand at helping em turn up.....meantime.....a suggestion.....when you send coins to a dealer and the name of the dealer has the word coin in it....try using CN instead of Coin

    John,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I NEVER use coin or numismatics or any shape or form of those words. In my opinion and those within Fed-X security, the criminals that are targetting these packages are doing so because in most cases these packages are light in weight and are shipped in boxes thereby drawing attention to them. In the case mentioned here by Heritage, that obviously is not the case since 62 or 63 $20 Libs and/or Saints would be very heavy. But, the insurance companies that provide the private coverage Mark mentioned almost always require the packages be shipped via a box inside a box. If you're shipping 1 or 2 or even 3 coins and they go box in a box you have a package with very little weight inside a large box. I'm certain they are not targetting packages by company since there are simply too many thousands of packages per day that flow through these sorting facilities. That leaves the lightweight package inside a big box as a primary reason for suspicion. More often than not they, the bad guys, think these packages contain jewelry, but whatever they think is inside, they realize a lightweight pacakge inside a big box is most likely something of value because of their knowledge of insurance regs and the fact that most folks are not going to ship documents inside a box.......they'll use an envelope.

    Just my two cents.

I've used Registered mail for 30 years. Never more than 4 or 5 days to deliver and never a single problem. The ONLY way to go IMO.

For that much moola why not send it via bonded courier service. Might cost ya $200-$300 but it worth it in the long run.

  • A recent registered letter took ten days to reach me in NY, from Co.. Not the first time either. Wayyy too slow!
  • on a side note for Fedex.

I have sent at the very least 20,000 fedex packages and NEVER had one lost.

Only about 50 have had coins in them.
  • "I have sent at the very least 20,000 fedex packages and NEVER had one lost."

    JB, consider yourself lucky.

I've sent AT LEAST that amount as well but SEVERAL have gotten lost or mishandled (i.e. accepted worthless personal check when I specified secured funds - for COD's, or they lost the pasyment instrument after they collected it).

Although, their declared value is a joke & I stopped paying it over 5 years ago. I was spending over 20k per year on it and they almost never paid out - even when they were clearly at fault. They go to extreme lenghts to find a reson not to pay you. Anyway, the "self-insurance" savings are now about $90,000 net as they average about $2,000 per year in screwups.

    A thought about Fedex:

I'm sure any dealer using them knows they don't insure coins and must have outside insurance. The crooked (smart) Fedex employee knows this, too. He figures if his company isn't insuring the package, there's very little grief to be had for a "misplaced" package here or there., since Fedex won't have to make good on any insurance.

If you're a dealer, does Fedex pick up at your shop? If so, that's how the employee knows what's being shipped.

My suggestion (besides not having anything like "coin" or "numismatics" in your return address): Take your packages to a drop box, rather than using pickup service. Obviously this won't work for Heritage because of their volume, but should be doable for the average dealer.

Someone please let me know if I am out of line here.
I guess I am looking for someone to explain to me why someone would ship 63 Twenty Dollar Gold Peices via Fedex without knowing that they do not insure coins, knowing that they would need to get third party insurance, knowing the potential for something to "fall off the truck" ???

Registered & Insured mail via the US Postal Service should have been the only method of shipping even considered here. I would think that getting the package to its destination safely would be more important than getting it to its destination quickly.

A year ago I won a coin at the Heritage FUN auction for around $3K . They sent it FEDEX. Everything else I ever got from them was sent USPS priority. Its always left in the mailbox tho. No signature is ever required.

dtkk49a (and others) - Did anyone ever say Heritage didn't have insurance on the coins? I'd bet my 74-CC dimes that they have a 3rd party insuring their Fedex packages. They didn't get to where they are by making dumb business decisions. However, that doesn't mean they don't want to catch the bustard.

There is a limit to the insurance you can purchase this way.

Also, Heritage has an insurance policy that covers lost packages, and they have a very specific way of having you ship coins to them above a certain dollar amount.

One very good thing about FedEx is that I can take it to the drop off in my city at 7:00p.m. and mark it for next day early a.m. delivery, so the coins are only out of sight for about 15 hours. To me this narrows the window of opportunity substantially for theft of this type.

For those talking about "delivery confirmation," this has always bothered me as well. I find "delivery confirmation" packages sitting in my mail box. What good is that? They should send the packages "signature confirmation" which requires me to go around to the window and sign for the package. Delivery confirmation costs $.55 and signature confirmation costs $1.80.

As I have said before; wonder what Heritage would say or do if you told them that you did not get the package.

No, you're not out of line here! 63 $20 gold makes for a hefty little package, is there no wonder why it's missing! First class and registered mail can be insured up to $25000! Using Fedex was an act of stupity! Might as well had sent them by a jackass!! As a receptient, I would have insisted on registered mail! Why even bother?

<< <i>My suggestion (besides not having anything like "coin" or "numismatics" in your return address): Take your packages to a drop box, rather than using pickup service >>

Barry, my insurance company does not allow that for my FedEx packages - the packages must be dropped off at a FedEx office or picked up and scanned by a FedEx employee.

To those of you who have said it was foolish (or worse) for the sender to use FedEx - you don't have all of the facts and appear to be big fans of hindsight. It's unfair to criticize when you don't know the particulars.
