UPDATE ON STOLEN -- MISSING COINS IN FED EX SYSTEM $ 175,000 MISSING URGENT

  • I do not see how anyone can tell that a smaller box is within a larger box, unless they open it first. If the smaller box weighs X amount of lbs. - and it is then placed within a larger box, it will not be lighter - it will be heavier. Maybe I am dense, but that's how I see it.

I would never mail that much product uninsured, and never with the word 'coin' or anything related on the address or return address. I also would not post anything about it on a public forum to tip off the thief(s), that it was even yet missed since not that much time has passed. Maybe later, but I think the package may still show up. Sometime things get lost in the mail for awhile.

    Who said there wasn't insurance?
Doesn't this "declared value" work the same as insurance? I guess I opened my mouth before I did my homework.

To those of you who have said it was foolish (or worse) for the sender to use FedEx - you don't have all of the facts and appear to be big fans of hindsight. It's unfair to criticize when you don't know the particulars.

Exactly! Large volume shippers may have special arrangements that we don't know about and at the very least have insurance coverage thru themselves or another insurer. One thing on volume gold shipments like that is that in order to get a certain price for a cetain time period you need to get it to your buyer ASAP. A few years back I sold 20 one ounce gold eagles to a local coin dealer. When I walked in he picked up the phone and got a price from his bulk buyer so that he could make an offer to me. By the time I left he was already packaging the coins for shipment and they were likely sent out yet that day even tho it was late. That sorta precluded using registered mail.

<< <i>No, you're not out of line here! 63 $20 gold makes for a hefty little package, is there no wonder why it's missing! First class and registered mail can be insured up to $25000! Using Fedex was an act of stupity! Might as well had sent them by a jackass!! As a receptient, I would have insisted on registered mail! Why even bother? >>

Approximately one million packages move through the FedEx hub in Memphis every night in the span of 3 hours and I would guess that at least half weighed more than this package. More than likely it was random, and someone got lucky.

Wanna guess where your packages more than likely end up on a nightly basis?

Not even large-volume shippers. Except for Registered Mail, everything I send goes out with Delivery Confirmation only--that and insurance that doesn't involve the USPS. I've sent coins and other valuables via DHL many times, too... all of it covered outside of the shipper's plan, with a declared value of: $0.

It only took one flaky dealing with coins via Fedex to break me of ever doing it again.

Fedex is a deal killer for me - just ask my former dealer. I don't have the money and time to Risk on them.

And, to be fair, my Registered packages are delivered in "weeks", not days. 2-3 days delivery with Registered is laughable, from my standpoint.

  • “It contained 63 1904 $20 Lib's in PCGS/NGC MS62”

Did I read this correctly? Who is hoarding 1904 $20 Lib’s and why?
And why all MS 62’s ?
Are the thieves so stupid they don’t realize that all these coins have registered numbers and won’t just crack them out?

  • I just had a registered package take 14 days to get from Ohio to Portland Oregon. I could not find out where it was because the astute employee at my local PO did not scan it when I mailed it!!!!!!!
The postmaster at another local post office found it for me today, as it finally arrived in Portland and was scanned into the system. All of you USPS registered mail fans have been D*MNED LUCKY from where I stand.image

It would seem that there is indeed an opportunity to offer a delivery service that is lightning fast and NEVER EVER loses a package. Any takers?

That would be the old Fedex before they brought over Mr UPS Executive Guy to make things better. Now we just have 2 UPS's.
