Is there a way to view eBay without their fancy scripts running?

eBay is the only website that slows my computer down (I am on dial-up) when trying to view it. I am assuming their fancy advertising scripts that are running are causing it since no other website (i.e. PCGS message forums, msn.com, etc.) I go to gives me that problem.

Any help is appreciated.

I had to turn off script debugging in my browser's settings just to get eBay to work regularly. I'm on cable and after a few pages, there is a noticeable slowness. It's all that crap they put on the pages to try and sell you something other than the auctions you're looking at.

Disable active scripting and your speed will dramatically improve on eBay. You'll lose a few features, but they are very easy to workaround. You will also need to add the forums to your trusted zone because the PM feature uses active scripting.

I use a little program called AdMuncher and it wipes that stuff out along with every other site like it.

It's adjustable for settings. I haven't seen a banner ad or a pop-up in years either.

How does one disable active scripting in IE? I see a radio button for script debugging in the IE options pulldown menu -- are script debugging and active scripting the same?

Tools / Internet Options / Security / highlight Internet (the globe), click Custom Level. Scroll through and find Active Scripting. Check disable and click OK, then verify the setting by clicking Yes.

After you do that, go in to Trusted Sites and add http://forums.collectors.com so that your PMs will work.

Excellent. Can't wait to try this out -- I just hope it lets me retain my "blocked sellers" list on Fraudbay. That feature saves so much time, especially when trying to avoid the same dam scamsters pawning NTC gold -- or your neck of the woods, 50s to 70s proof sets (UNOPENED PROOF SET L@@K).

Error message says trusted sites must begin with https://

Purple, when you add this site to the trusted zone, make sure you unclick the box that says "only https: sites can be in the trusted zone".

aye....K6AZ....tried it both ways .....no dice.....I click to PM you and its a no go. The avatar in the upper right corner of my broswers moves like it wants to go somewhere ........dead end

OK, try this. Go to Tools>Internet Options... go to the security tab. Click on the trusted sites icon. Down below, click on the default settings box. Make sure the slider is set to low. You should be able to send PMs with the default settings.

$25/hour for phone support

$35/hour for tech work done on my premises

$75/hour for work done on location.

And those are at the low end of the spectrum.

ok k6 check this out.........I did the switch to low like you said and it worked just fine........but in doing that it also switched my scripting to enable which allowed for PM's to come up. Now going back in and switching it back to Disable Active Scripting......it changed my Security level back to what it was in the beginning and now shut off my PM's .....sounds like a double edge sword to me.

Green check mark at lower right of browser is non-existant.

Purple, you only want the trusted sites set to low. For the general internet (the globe) it should still show active scripting disabled. There are a different set of options for each zone, and they are all independent.

Yep, i got that going on......It seems like ....at least on this puter if I shut it off while in the globe Icon it shuts it off all the way across ........no matter if you have this site in trusted sites or not.

Are you saying you can't have active scripting disabled in the general internet zone? That it overides the trusted zone? It doesn't work that way in Windows 2000 or XP. I haven't worked on a 98 box in a while, but I would think the zones are independent even on 98.

Well, there should be no reason why it shouldn't work. From the top, go to Tools> Internet Options. Click the security tab. Click on the globe, then choose custom settings. Disable active scripting. Then click on the round green Trusted sites. Add this site, and be sure to unclick the https only checkbox. It should work.

I'm following you ok K6AZ and just went through it all again but no luck. No PM ability...no green trusted site globe on page.

Let me know if you have any other ideas.

The past few weeks I've just disabled active scripting when I head to eBay and then change it back when done.

Ron, are you absolutely sure this is the site that is in your trusted zone?

Double check it and make sure. Then close all browser windows, come back to this board and see if it shows Trusted sites.

Then when you click the sites button while the green ball is highlighted, you should see the forums in there.

And, while still in the trusted zone, in the custom level section, active scripting should be checked enabled:

OK...I deleted what was in my trusted sites and did a cut & paste of what you typed. When I pasted that into the add box there was alot of site pop up below...looked like it was all forum stuff. When I clicked add they all disappeared and what you typed showed up below as the only entry.

So anyway, now I have a trusted site showing in the lower right of my screen but still can't PM.

OK, go back to the security tab and make sure the security setting for the trusted zone is set to low. You should then be able to send PMs.

That being the case, I have no idea why it isn't working on your system. I've tested it on Win98SE, Win2K and WinXP. Works fine on all.

Mozilla, or Firefox if you want a little less system overhead.

Not Netscape anymore, it's been bugged up by AOL. The last decent version of Netscape was 6.2.3.0 and it's a bit outdated these days.

I ONLY use IE when going to Microsoft and I'm a damn MS engineer!!

Let me tell you, I have a few people here locally who I do work for when their systems malfunction. I had one the other day who was nailed, and he was running Firefox, he had IEX totally removed from his machine. Nothing is foolproof. As a matter of fact, IEX with the right settings is bulletproof almost. The only problem is the typical user doesn't have any idea on how to set it up for the best security.

I don't recommend removing IE from any MS operating system. I just don't recommend using it to browse the web.

Obviously, it's needed for me to access microsoft.

The average internet user is safer running Mozilla than IE.

BTW, your prices are too cheap, that had better be rock bottom for buddies. I used to charge quite a bit more before I accepted a long term contract position.

Actually, it's perfectly safe to remove it from XP, but then you have the problem with the Windows update among other things. I prefer it, but then again I do this for a significant part of my income so I know how to fortify it. I've just seen too many people lulled into a false sense of security using Netscape/Mozilla, and get nailed.
