Not legit, this auction was discussed roughly a week ago. It's fishing for suckers to sell to outside of ebay via Money Order.

This has got to be illegal somehow, does the seller go through with this sale or botch the sale and try to sell more outside Ebay?

You have to be verified to buy it now. So you contact the guy and he tries to get you to send a money order outside of the ebay transaction "saving him fees" or something like that. Of course it is illegal both because that is against ebay rules and you will send money and never recieve payment. It is a scam.

He never adds anyone to the approved bidders list. When you contact him to be added, he starts working you into the idea that he has multiple lots and that you can purchase them for a such and such amount of money by sending him a money order for it.

If you look closely at the feedback, it is plain to see this is another hijacked account. The scammer probably got access to it by "phising", or in other words, by the eBay/PayPal scam emails.

Eric is right. No feedback since November 2, and all of it is for educational books and materials for young children. And suddenly, six weeks later, something looking like a scam involving gold bullion.

I have reported this as a likely hijacked account.

This item has been pulled by eBay:

Please consider this listing and transaction as cancelled. If anybody contacts you to complete the sale, please ignore the request. Completing the sale outside of eBay may be unsafe and will not be covered by eBay purchase protection programs.

Hopefully they'll work out the details of the (probably) hijacked eBay account as well.
