How many of your coins will not be resold in your lifetime?

Do you own any coins important enough to you that they'll not be resold, assuming normal circumstances. I realize in certain emergencies, all coins are for sale, but how many do you currently plan to keep and pass on to family?

I have alternate means of securing my retirement. 100% of my coins will *not* be resold in my lifetime, they will all be passed on to whoever shows the most interest in them and appreciate the history behind them as much as I do. The only exception is that I'll occasionally trade/swap a coin for other coins - that is the only way they leave my hands.

Edited to add: Cherrypicked an R-6 variety off E-bay for $68 !!!!!!! Make that 263 !!!!!!!!

Great question. An interesting tangent this post could take: assuming abnormal circumstances in which you had to sell almost every coin you owned, how many of you would still maintain your interest in the hobby? No NewP's to share, no hunting the internet for great buys, no binges at coin shows -- would your interest wane?

All depends on a couple of my grand-daughters' and their continued interest in the hobby. None of my children seem to "give a hoot" about coins, so I will play it by ear and, if necessary, sell of my valuable coins for cash...I already know that they know what to do with it. lol

I know my interest would wane..... it would be depressing not to be able to buy or hunt for anything...... it's tough enough as it is to come around here regularly and look at everyone newping stuff everyday!!

The coins my wife has given me over the years will not be sold--they will be passed down... She has given me coins like my 1942/41 Mercury Dime, Three Legged Buffalo Nickel, 1921-D Walker to name a few. All other coins -- who knows they are neat, but isn't everything for sale? After all you can't take them with you!

I agree, concerning coins, that is. I will not sell my soul.

The real question in this thread might be which coins we own which we would not sell for anything less than a seriously exorbitant price.

I own three: an 1839 Booby Head cent in G, and an 1832 French 5 Franc piece from my grandfather, which were the first coins ever in my "collection". The last is a 1927-S Peace Dollar in VF which stayed in my parents' 1950 Hudson just in case they ran out of gas. All the coins I bought, and even my 2 double eagles which were a Christmas present from my wife could become available to the right buyer. This is a hobby after all, not a religion.

I've got five or so nothing short of crazy money would buy, because they are so rare and attractive. And a couple that were gifts. The rest--I'm always looking for an upgrade and are for sale/trade.

A few months back when I was considering retiring I went through most of my collection and nothing there called out to me as a family heirloom. None of my wife's 4 children have or will show much interest in owning them so they will all be sold off. I've never had the bug to own the so-called important coins, have my name emblazoned on a plastic slab or be recognized for any great contribution to the hobby. The fact is that I enjoy the coin for its history, for its artistry and the fact that you "rent something" that is not seen every day and there are thousand, millions of interesting coins out there left to see. Coins have there own vista albeit not as wide and grand as some of the scenery on the planet, but you can enjoy the experience of them just like you can a trip to the Grand Canyon without ownership.

Its ironic that I am in the stage of my life when I can most afford to own them but the idea of ownership has become less appealing over time to me. The stories and the camaraderie that goes along with collecting has replaced any strong desire for ownership. I find myself in coin shops now spending more time talking to the owners and collectors then eyeballing coins for purchase.

I know my wife prefers this, she is no longer bugged to look at and examine the latest purchase.

A few of my long term keepers I dont plan on selling in any near future, but that doesnt mean thier wont come a time when I decide to move em.

I plan on keeping them & would love to pass them on to my family. Hopefully that won't be for at least another 45 years!

The real good stuff, the key coins, probably will not be sold unless I just
got tired of collecting in the future. The common coins, bulk everything else
will probably be sold in my later years. I do not hesitate to periodically sell coins
from my personal collection and I have taken losses when necessary. From
a collector's standpoint I think it is an important thing to do in order to
strengthen a collection. If you don't believe me just go to my website and click
on "selling your coins". I am always upgrading my collection.

The ones I'm collecting presently. Had'em (PQs that is) and had to sell'em. Royally pissed me off! BUT...ya gotta do whatchya gotta do. Therefore, I'm taking the easier softer way and enjoying the hobby much better by collecting raws (taking extreme caution after what I've learned from the folks at this forum) and placing them in Whitman books.
