New to the board with a question

I bought the 1999 Proof set and it is still in its package. On the nickle it has many scratches on the face of the coin. I was wondering it this is some kind of error or what, and how could this happen. I would upload a picture but my coin is locked up in my bank safe.
Thanks for all your input,
Dot

Welcome aboard. It's not too unusual for there to be culls in the proof sets.

  • Hi, LittleDot. It would be hard to say without a picture. It could be as simple as crappy handling on the part of the mint. It could be struck on a defective planchet, it could have been struck through something, it could be martians...image

  • crack it open and gold plate it! the coin collectors show says gold plated coins command a premium!

probably bad handling or an error.

    WELCOME!!

They're known by many names but they're just substandard or problem coins. Any number of things
can cause them to fall into this category.

image to the forums! It's most likely simply a damaged coin, that was mishandled at the mint. Nonetheless, the 1999 Proof Set has gone up in value quite a bit since it was issued.
  • lol i watched the hsn guys too and crack up at them thanks for your reply

Could be mishandling at the mint. Where did you get it from. Mint packaging is easily opened and it could have been handled by the previous owner.

Not to worry. Just be on special lookout for the one known as "kiefer".

No, the Martians just want to blow up the earth. Gremlins are the ones who cause mischief.
