Home U.S. Coin Forum

Another forum/site? gasp....

Has anyone here cut their teeth in coin discussion group elsewhere as robust as this site, that...
deals more with raw, lower grade, noncertified US coins. Thinking of young collectors, or noobs, those with lower budgets and/or different goals than most of the folks here? or is this an oxymoron, like "military intelligence" or "honest attorney".

it is fun to see how the other half lives here, though.

thanks!
Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.

Do you mean sites where people buy/sell raw, lower grade, noncertified stuff, or sites where people discuss those types of coins? If it's discussion, I feel I speak for many others here when I say that there's no reason not to be able to discuss any level of collecting here. There's room here for every type of collector.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

You're right - this site is great for any type of coin discussion, but the BST has very few coins I can afford ($50 and under, roughly) that aren't very graded very low or moderns. There are even fewer in the series I enjoy.
  • I frequent a Bust forum, because frankly, there are very few experts here on these forums in the area that I am interested in... so I go over there often, and have just about stopped sharing my purchases here, because of the non-expert opinions I often get...

Have you tried a Wanted-to-buy thread?

Check out rec.collecting.coins. It's an unmoderated newgroup, not a "board" sponsored by someone or an organization.
Being unmoderated, there are some trolls, spammers, and plain old idiots there, but overall, I like it. There are a bunch of RCCers who also post here, myself included. RCC is also (now) famous for being fodder for the ACG lawsuit.

Google is pretty good for newbies but there is a real troll problem. At least at
google discussion of all coin related subjects is allowed.

Cointalk is also an excellent site with a good mixture of beginning and advanced collectors.

Obviously this site is the best though.image

Most of my coin purchases are $50 and under. I have only bought 3 coins that were over $100. I buy what I like with what I have. When that is $50 I spend $50. The rare occasions I have more than that I spend accrodingly. I have a very modest collection of less than 50 coins total with one quarter of that being Morgans. I have a total of 12 certified coins, 5 of those being Morgans.

I talk about whatever I want here with a tempering of subject and content to hopefully ask meaningful questions and give relevent answers. My Coin knowledge is limited but growing, yet I still feel I have a lot to offer this forum. Don't be intimidated by the members who can sink thousands of dollars into newps and the members who are working on the #1 registry collections. You can post all you want. I for one would like to see some more discussion of coins like you described above. If you post somewhere else you lessen the impact of this place.

I miss the old Numisaddict site. They indulged in the lower grade, noncertified stuff. It was a fun place.

What sort of non-expert opinions do you get about bust coins?? image
