Back to the 1817 cent--I found an old Lucky Strike WWII cigarette tin from 1942 among my ex-father in law's belongings (given to me by my late ex) that was full of foreign coins--many from the early to mid 1800s (Mexico, Peru--a pair of llamas flanking a volcano, Spain, etc.--some of which were quite nice and I've put in my dark side collection). The tin itself is probably a collectors' item. I looked through it a number of times and kept passing over what looked like a copper slug. The last time I looked through the coins I rubbed the slug with a little spit and what to my wonderous eyes did appear but a 1798 large cent in maybe AG1/PO2 condition! Obverse and reverse still discernable (Braddick would love it!). I've got a lot of gem Morgans, Peace dollars and a nice run of VF-AU bust halves--but I still love that 1798 large cent--worn as it may be. So that's why I'm enamored with the 1817 large cent.

Yeah--but at least no one is whining about Ebay and limp currency.

Once again my edit--Do you realize how hard I'll have to work for that sorry 1817 large cent at this rate--assuming I ever get it!!! I guess I could do 268 TTTs and win but that could possibly tarnish my stellar?? reputation on this Board!! So I'll just lay back and snipe it at the last moment!

This post is sinking dangerously low--what will happen if it goes to page two??? I shudder to think--unless everyone moves that I should win the 1817 large cent by acclaimation!

OK--I guess not--what now, do I have to beg? Hardly fitting for an old fart of my advanced years--just trying to keep the thread alive before it sinks to pages 3, 4, or beyond! Gonfunko, you'll never know how much youare appreciated if that happens!

Just to keep this thread OT--here's an early coin collecting tale--when I was about 11, back in the early 50's, my uncle took me to a coin shop in Washington DC and gave me $5 to spend. As I recall--coins long since sold--I bought an album for Indian Head Cents (35 cents) two EF flying Eagle cents (1857 and 58 for about $1 each) and about 15 different date Indian heads (probably VF+ as all had complete Liberty Headbands and I recall an 1865 with an L, 1880s, 1890s and 1900s @ 10 to 15 cents each). I believe that I got change back from the $5. I kept these and added to them until 1963 when I sold the lot to help pay my college tuition. My album was almost complete and I might have gotten $40 for the lot. Sure wish I still had them today. Anybody else have regrets about early collecting mistakes/bad decisions?
