Certified bullion

Does it make sense to get bullion coins certified? I thought that these coins trade at basically the bullion level and maybe they have a small mark up for some sort of numistmatic value. A friend of mine buys only MS-69 gold bullion eagles and he seems to pay a pretty steep premium for them. Does this make sense?

I don't think it is worth it -- with several exceptions:

    1. Mint errors
    2. Cool toning you want to preserve
    3. Because you feel like it
    4. Want to make sure the kids don't touch it.

For me the answer would be no it's not worth it, but to each his own. I think the bullion coins look nice in slabs, but I wouldn't want to pay the premium for a graded one.

Right now you can buy 2004 PCGS MS-69 1 oz gold eagles from Hans Tulving at the same price as raw. Might as well get the slab.

I would say that if it grades 70, it's worth it. Otherwise, not, unless you like the pretty holder.

I've been trying to sell an 02 1/10 gold graded MS-69 for awhile now, I can't get more than the regular unslabbed counterpart.
