Russ just put up a thread asking where Airplanenut's thread disappeared to regarding his visit to the Smithsonian and now his is missing.

    Interestingly, it looks like he posted the same thread on the board "across the street," and reported later (in an edit) that he had to remove that one, too.

    What's the deal? I didn't see it.

    I just got off the phone with David Hall. I can't reveal specifics, so don't even ask, but I can say that the removal of Jeremy's thread was necessary and the right thing to do. It was not David or PCGS being heavy handed.

    Let me guess, PCGS will be slabbing the coins and doesn't want a bunch of griping about having been cleaned to get the gunk off of them.

    That reminds me.
    A while back I tried to post a photo to the public binaries newsgroup and it kept going poof after a few seconds of visibility.
    I finally figured out that the jpeg image cannot be all numbers for the filename (eg "1865.jpg", "1680.jpg"), adding some letters to the filename solved the problem eg ("Spain1680.jpg").

    I read Jeremy's post early this morning. It was very interesting read. Sorry to see it got removed.

    I will say, however, that last month, I went to the Smithsonian to see the coin exhibit before it went away for the rest of my life. It was very nice, however, I think they could have done a little bit better on the lighting.

    I loved seeing the 2 1933 Double Eagles and the 1804 dollars! They were just fantastic!

    Perhaps the big hoo-hoo is over security with the recent release of "intents" of the Al-Raghead network on a possible strike at US financial institutions/icons. what better way than to steal/destroy national coin treasures of the US?....image Still kind of dumb to remove a innocent post IMHO....image

    AMEN to that.

    I saw it once, probably about eight years ago. I lived in California all my life, and my wife's family was from southeast PA. Once when we were visiting them, we decided to spend two days in DC. I absolutely HAD to see that collection. My goodness, for any coin collector who knows they'll never be the next Eliasberg, it was positively jaw-dropping. Seeing those 1804 dollars, the 1933 Saint, all those wonderfully preserved rare coins in one place...talk about dying and going to heaven. My wife, bless her soul, was walking around with an occasional "wow" and "these are pretty," but that's about it.

    I'm really dismayed that they've dismantled it, but I'm *extremely* grateful that I at least got to see it all once before I die. I just hope those who haven't yet seen it will someday be able to say the same.
