Placid and Don: Thanks for your posts and compliments on my new 1885-S and the 1879 Morgans.

Placid: I liked the 1885-S so much that I purchased it as a duplicate to another PCGS MS-63 1885-S that I already have in my Registry Set.
I'll compare the 2 coins, and may put one of them up for sale in the future on the BS&T Board. I can't pass up a pretty 1885-S - I feel that it's an underrated date that comes with really nice strong mint luster.

I actually think that the 1879-O may be the tougher of these 2 coins as it more than doubles from 63 to 64, and is very tough in PL. I liked this coin's Semi-PL Cameo look which is harder to get in those dates which are not typically available in PL condition. It's also 2 grading point upgrade for my Registry Set over my MS-61, which may also be up for sale in the future as another duplicate.

    Thanks for reading and posting!

I especially dig that 79-O. By the pics, it appears to be better than what they graded it. Nice score, Stuart.image
What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?
  • Im not too big of a fan of lower uncirculated Morgans, but these look decent.

Stuart: Good eye, those were tough years and usually weak strikes. I love a well-struck coin myself. It forgives a lot.

Razorface, CoinGuy89 & Wolf359: Thanks very much for your posts and compliments on my new 1885-S & 1879-O Morgans.

Jack: I totally agree with you that I prefer a high luster, well-struck coin with a few scattered contact marks. I know that the 1879-O is tough to get fully struck, and also tough to get in Semi-PL to PL.

I always prefer to get cameo contrast Morgans which are at least Semi-PL to PL.

I just received the 1885-S yesterday, and it's very attractive in person. The reverse is nearly PL and the obverse is a highly lustrous Semi-PL.

Today I received my second coin purchase from TeleTrade the 1879-O in PCGS MS-63 and I am really pleased with it!

The cojn looks more like an MS-64 to me with a clean cheek, no major distracting marks and with the bonus of a fully struck Cameo Semi-PL Obverse and Reverse -- which is pretty good for an 1879-O!! image

I am also pleased with the 1885-S in PCGS MS-63 that I received from TeleTrade last week. So, in summary my first two experiences with TeleTrade have both been good ones.

Photos of both coins are posted earlier in this thread.

    Stuart,

    I agree, at least from the photo's the 79-o look's more 64ish than a 3.

    nice coins

    Thanks Jim D & Gemini!

Jim the 1879-O has that same brilliant cartwheel luster in the Semi-PL fields that you typically see on the 1881-S, but also the nice frosty Cameo devices to provide a nice contrast.

It's a very high eye appealing coin that I would have also selected if I were able to examine the coin in person.

    Hey Stuart,

That's a very pretty 1879-O. I have one but it's no where near as nice as yours.

Of course the 1885-S isn't too shabby either.
