POLL #4 - State Quarter Challenge 2002

Going to do several polls to pick the best state quarter design from the first five years. In five or so years, will do another poll for the second batch of 25 and then have the final elimination for the -BEST- state quarter design.

Five polls, one for each year and then the top five from each year will be in the semi-final poll. The design that gets the least votes from all the polls will get the honors of being -THE DOG-

Images are from the US Mint website.

That's the problem. If you're from the South (I lived in Tennessee until I was 32) you'll instantly recognize the reverse on the Mississippi as a Magnolia blossom. However, if you live anywhere else (I currently live in Massachusetts), nobody knows what a Magnolia looks like.

Mississippi is clearly the least cheesy design.

Not true. I live in Columbus Ohio (40 North, 83 West) and we have 2 Magnolias in our yard. Many varieties are winter hardy as far north as mid-Michigan. There isn't a prettier or more fragrant bloom.

Another very uninspired year of designs. The only one with any attractiveness to it is Mississippi and it's design is in violation of the mint's own guidelines for submitted designs. (No state trees, state flowers etc) Interestingly it is also the only design that was wholly created by the mint with no outside input. (Mississippi never bothered to submit any designs to the mint at all.)

The Mint did a good job. Mississippi is going to the finals.

They are all lousy. Not surprised that Mississippi was done by the mint without any input, since the rest all look exactly like what you'd expect a committee to come up with.

I'll vote for Mississippi only because prooflike wants more votes. Otherwise, I'd sit this round out. Maybe this contest needs a "wildcard" - I bet lots of earlier losers will get more votes than the 2002 winner.

I have a magnolia tree in my yard so I guess I'll vote for Mississippi too.

Mississippi in a landslide. Nothing even close for second. No doubt about this one.

What I find interesting in this poll is that LA has gotten the lowest vote total of any of the state quarters. One stinking vote. Can you imagine how the people of LA would feel about that. It's bad enough that your state quarter design comes in last as the worst design, but to get only one vote. image

so far, 2002 was the worst year for state quarter desingns. there's usually at least one decent design a year. don't like anyoneimage

yes, there will be a wildcard from 1999, CT had the most votes, but NJ put up a good fight, it was neck & neck.

Looks like one simple idea is better than trying to cram several on to a 24.3 mm diameter disk.
