Just curious what the gang sees in this obverse.

It's the devil seller again! I wish I could find the thread from when his feedback was 666 and link to it from here. But in regards to your question - ANACS should have notedc if it was cleaned, so I'm going to assume that the lines are either planchet rolling marks, some sort of cabinet friction, or just the picture.

Looks cleaned... but hey, ANACS doesn't make mistakes, does it?
    When in doubt, don't.

At least the grade looks to be about right. Hard to believe it could be "harshly" cleaned and anacs wouldn't see it!

Yeah, I wonder why ANACS didn't net grade that?

This is but yet another example of why I have lost faith in ANACS lately. This appears to be a coin they are netting without citing the problem on the label. The details look better than 50, but the coin has obviously been cleaned.

Now I suppose someone will be along shortly to post a picture of that PCGS Mercury dime.

  • Speaking as someone that carries a Morgan as a pocket piece and who has seen similar marks when carrying a lot of loose change with the Morgan, I'll reserve judgement instead of trying to guess from a picture.

I understand everyone's sentiments. The obverse does have an unnatural look to it that does not appear to be too difficult to detect. If it was a problem, I would have suspected a net grade also. Whether ANACS was right or wrong, it is an appearance I would not want looking back at me from a coin in my collection.

What looks cleaned about it? Looks like a normal ole circulated AU to me.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

This might be a tough one. Looks cleaned but like Dog says it also looks like just good ol' circulation. The coin being as old as it is and white leads me to believe it at least has been dipped. Now add hairlines that we can obviously see and it makes a better case for cleaned.

BUTimage I believe the determining factor would be if the hairlines we see in the field (which look like circulation) go up and over into Liberty's cheek. Just looking at it from all angles folks. For me I wouldn't buy it whether it's been cleaned or not as it's not the type of "Look" I can appreciate.

I agree with Dog.There's plenty of natural luster left from looking at the obverse, and the lack of luster on the reverse is the lighting and angle of the pic IMO.Those fine hairlines that look to be magnified by the pic. are very normal on a circulated dollar. It Looks fine to me from those pics.I don't think ANACS blew it at all on this one.

Hard to tell without being able to look at the coin in the light and see how the luster looks and behaves.

I agree with lava. This is a date I am looking for in that grade, and I would pass on this coin. It just doesn't look right to me for an AU, and I own several. FWIW, Steve Estes has a PCGS AU50 that doesn't look right to me either.

I can not say for sure from that pic period. If I had to guess, I would say a dipped circulated piece graded about right.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

This coin doesnt looked cleaned to me at all. Just suffers from an significant amount of circualtion marks which contrast with the surface luster. In fact, the luster looks original from the photo! That doesnt mean Id buy it, I would try to find one that looks better.

    Cleaned.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • It could of been dropped on gravel or sand accidently, and then stepped on. I just don't see anacs missing something like this. Jerry
