Seems healthy to me. Lots of new messages and many with interesting topics. A lot of the people here feel at ease with each other and can have a healthy argument and still be friends. Some members tend to go off the deep end once in a while but I think that is to be expected. Overall I think this is the best coin forum around. If you know of a better forum, let me know.
It has slowed up some- I think the OT threads and the goofing around threads might have hurt the forum in the long run but it is the summer time so I expect it to be somewhat slower. mike
It's not fading, just changing. There seem to be way too many non-coin related posts that lead to bickering. I try to avoid posting to them and focus on the coin related threads.
I don't think it's fading at all. I could do without the OT posts, though.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
This forum is thriving and booming. I've been here from the outset. Enormous numbers of people show up now. Rare is it when a post has not gotten large numbers of responses, asking the questions I would have asked, making the points I would have made, by the time I read it. Didn't use to be that way. Time was when I was familiar with most of the posters. That is no longer remotely so.
You will find your interest in the forum individually waxing and waning, but I think we will discover that participation here is as sensitive a measure of the state of the hobby as there is.
I think this forum is always interesting and read it everyday when I can. The debates on various issues are always good, and show how different we all think. Yes there are lots of posts that are repeated but then there are new people coming in all the time. We are all here to learn, and help each other, even though we are many times competitors, but that’s O.K. because personally I would rather be beat out of a coin by a member than an outsider that contributes nothing to the learning experience. From my perspective what I would like to see is more posts by people on coins for sale they think are real bargains, and everyone’s continuing ideas on coins that are undervalued and overvalued. Market reports on shows and auctions are always good, as well as discussions every few weeks on the market in general.
Not fading.Like all message boards it just has a turnover rate. Lots of times alot of the regulars you know when you join will be gone except for a faithful few and it will be full of all new names.
Not fading. From the time I go to bed, and I check the board the next morning, there's still about the same number of threads.
1. It's summer. Time for more outdoor stuff, 2. People come and go. 3. Some topics have been rehashed umpteen times already and may get old to the old-timers. 4. I don't mind many of the OT posts, especially the ones asking for advice (politics is another thing). One thing the OT police don't realize is there's a lot of expertise in many fields, outside of coins, here. The comradery that develops among us is great in that we're willing to help others with non-coin issues when we can.
This place has slowed considerably and suddenly. It does change from time to time and does tend to slow as these occur. This coupled with the other outside factors are probably what's being seen. This place seems to have more going for it than ever, so expect it to coming roaring back soon enough.
Membership here has more than doubled over the last two years and is still growing daily. Not fading at all. Volume of posts seems to have slowed the last month or so, but that's only because summer is upon us.
Am I the only one who thinks this forum is fading fast?
I don't think so. Perhaps the proportion of interesting coin threads is waning, but overall, there is much activity, regular participation by newbies and dealers, and enough to keep me coming back for more.
Perhaps this may be because fewer people are buying coins because the material they like is getting too expensive for them? Might this be the reason for more off topic material? Perhaps the longer turn around times re grading also contributes to this perception. People aren't going to post grades as frequently under these circumstances.
Personally, I've bought 3 coins so far this year, which is about normal for me. But I'm not looking for material as aggressively as I have in the past; it seems whenever I find something nice, IMO, the prices go out of sight. So, I'll briefly look at an auction in conjunction with a large show, get a few lot consultations, and if I get the coin, great. I just submit my bids & forget about it until the show is over. Ie, two of the coins I got were from a Heritage Auction (Central States), and I was surprised to get them.

In the short time that I've been here, it seems to me that population is increasing not decreasing. Yes...entirely too many OT threads, but, I too, was posting OT until the long-timers made me aware of the proper forum regarding non-coin related threads.

Hey hey, my my Rock and roll can never die There’s more to the picture Than meets the eye. Hey hey, my my.
A winter’s day In a deep and dark December I am alone Gazing from my window from the street below On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow I am a rock I am an island
I’ve built walls A fortress deep and mighty That none may penetrate I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain It’s laughter and it’s loving I disdain I am a rock I am an island
Don’t talk of love but I’ve heard the word before It’s sleeping in my memory I won’t disturb the slumber of feelings that have died If I never loved I never would have cried I am a rock I am an island
I have my books And my poetry to protect me I am shielded in my armor Hiding in my room safe within my womb I touch no one and no one touches me I am a rock I am an island And a rock feels no pain And an island never cries
If you want to see a fading, moribund board look across the street. The problem with this board is that in some ways it’s a victim of its own success and popularity and suffers from too many posts.
In recent months a lot of new members have joined, most of whom seem to be relatively new to collecting. Now that is good and what this forum is all about in a sense–providing a source of helpful information and guidance. On the other hand it leads to a good number of posts about matters that have been discussed numerous times before, often several times in just the past month or two.
A suggestion to reduce the number of repetitive threads is for members to use the search feature to check past threads before posting new inquiries. Unfortunately, the newer users are often not familiar with that feature.
Another problem is the proliferation of “tangent” threads about shopping patterns, collecting budgets, personal income and the like. While a few of these, such as the “what do you do for a living” thread, add an element of neighborliness to the board, too many just clog the pages.
Worst of all are what I see as being self centered “all about me” threads that a few members repeatedly originate.
The result of all of this is that the really educational threads are often quickly buried.
And while I understand that many of us love to show off or share our newest acquisitions with other members, there do seem to be an awful lot of “look at my new coin” threads. In that regard, how about a perpetual, “look at my new coin” thread that would work like a chain thread to which everyone could go to show off their new acquisitions. It would most likely be at the top of the page most times since so many people would post to it, yet it would reduce the total number of threads, thus unclogging the board.

Ditto, and I haven't been around nearly as long.

ditto, the word "cycle" was the first thing I though when I read this thread title.
the "drama" ebbs and flows on here. lately there has been a lot of "noise" and not enough coin talk.

People just need to put forth a little more effort to respect the whole membership here.
If you don't like a certian thread for whatever reason, just skip over it. That really isn't hard to do!
Maybe saying that you respectfully disagree with a person would also help!....
